When it is said
A driver can say it before setting off, or at the wheel.
It also fits anyone who drives others, since it prays for the people in the driver’s care.
Where it comes from
No author known
How old is it?
A prayer about driving is plainly modern, and this one names no author. It is printed in a Russian family prayer book published in Moscow in 2015, which the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church recommended for publication. When it was first written is not known.
(Moscow: Blagovest, 2015)
The dangers it names
It prays against “the evil spirit of reckless driving” and “the unclean power of drunkenness”, which it says bring accidents and sudden death without repentance. Its last request looks ahead to old age, asking for a clear conscience and for no one ever to be killed or maimed through the driver’s carelessness.
In Church Slavonic
