What is gluttony, as one of the seven deadly sins?
Gluttony is eating or drinking past what you need, for the pleasure of it. It is not enjoying a good meal, which Scripture treats as a gift. It is the appetite in charge: more than enough, sooner than needed, and hard to stop.
Why it matters
Gluttony is easy to miss, because food and drink are good gifts and everyone needs them. The questions ask whether you eat or drink more than you need just because you enjoy it, and whether you stop once you have had enough. All of them ask the same thing: who is in charge, you or your appetite?

Gregory the Great counted five ways to be a glutton, and only one of them is eating too much: too soon, too finely, too much, too eagerly, and too fussily. Thomas Aquinas repeated the list six centuries later. The old word is the Latin gula, the throat.
