The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

Most pure Mother of God, Queen of All,hear our sighs, full of pain, before your wonder-working icon, brought from Mount Athos to Russia.

Look on your childrenwho suffer from illnesses no one can cureand fall down in faith before your holy icon.

As a bird covers her chicks with her wings,so cover us now with your veil that brings so much healing.

Where hope fades, be our sure hope.Where bitter sorrows overwhelm us, come as patience and relief.Where the darkness of despair has settled in the soul, shine with your light beyond words.

Comfort the fainthearted, strengthen the weak, and soften and enlighten hardened hearts.

Most merciful Queen, heal your people who are sick, stop the torment of cancer, and bless those who treat us,so that they may serve as instrumentsof the almighty Physician, Christ our Saviour.

Lady, joy of all who sorrow and comfort of the grieving, stretch out your hands, full of healing and cure,so that, receiving your wonder-working help soon,we may glorify the life-giving and undivided Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,to the ages of ages.Amen.

Her story

The Pantanassa is an icon of the Mother of God at Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, and its name is Greek for “Queen of All”.

The icon is small, painted in the 1600s, and stands in the monastery’s main church. It shows the Mother of God in a purple robe on a royal throne, holding the Christ Child, with two angels sheltering her with their wings. Elder Joseph, the spiritual father of the brotherhood that restored Vatopedi, brought the icon there about 1990. He told of a young man who had been practising magic and came to venerate it. Her face flashed like lightning, an unseen force threw him to the floor, and when he came to he confessed in tears and gave up magic. A Moscow charity gave the icon its Russian name, Vsetsaritsa, in 1995.

Why people ask The Pantanassa

Cancer

Greek Orthodox accounts tell of many people healed of cancer after the Paraklesis, a service of prayer to the Mother of God, was sung before this icon. In Russia people with cancer pray before copies of it, one of them in a Moscow children’s cancer centre since 1995.

In Church Slavonic
