The words of the prayer

Plain English

Lord, do not deprive me of Your heavenly blessings.Lord, deliver me from eternal torment.Lord, if I have sinned in mind or thought,in word or deed, forgive me.Lord, deliver me from all ignorance and forgetfulness, from faint-heartednessand a heart as numb as stone.Lord, deliver me from every temptation.Lord, enlighten my heart, darkened by evil desire.Lord, as a man I have sinned, but You, as a merciful God, have mercy on me,seeing the weakness of my soul.Lord, send Your grace to help me,so that I may glorify Your holy name.Lord Jesus Christ, write me, Your servant,in the book of life, and grant me a good end.Lord my God, though I have done nothing good before You,grant me by Your graceto make a good beginning.Lord, sprinkle the dew of Your grace into my heart.Lord of heaven and earth, remember me in Your kingdom,Your sinful servant, shameful and unclean.Amen.

Lord, accept me in repentance.Lord, do not forsake me.Lord, do not lead me into temptation.Lord, give me good thoughts.Lord, give me tears, the remembrance of death, and sorrow for my sins.Lord, put it in my mind to confess my sins.Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience.Lord, give me patience, courage and meekness.Lord, plant in me the root of good:the fear of You in my heart.Lord, grant me to love Youwith all my soul and mind, and to do Your will in all things.Lord, shelter me from certain people, from demons and passions, and from anything else that is not fitting.Lord, You know that You do as You will.Let Your will be done in me, a sinner, for You are blessed for ever and ever.Amen.

When it is said

They are the seventh of the prayers before sleep in the Russian prayer book, said at home at the end of the day.

Their heading says there are 24, one for each hour of the day and night. St Tikhon’s English prayer book splits them into 12 for the day and 12 for the night.

Where it comes from

Author by tradition

Who wrote them?

Russian prayer books print them under the name of St John Chrysostom, the great preacher and archbishop of Constantinople, who died in AD 407. That is a tradition, not a proven fact, and the date of the prayers is not known.

Twelve for the night, in 1625

In 1625 a Psalter printed in Moscow gave the prayers to say before sleep. Among them were 12 of these short prayers, one for each hour of the night, starting “Lord, accept me in repentance”. Today’s prayer books print all 24. So found Hieromonk Dalmat (Yudin), in a study of the Russian bedtime prayers.

What the words mean

Meekness is not weakness

A Russian Orthodox prayer book explains “meekness” with words it credits to St John Chrysostom. The meek man can bear the insults done to himself. But he defends those who are wronged, and stands up strongly against the people who wrong them.

Azbyka.ru, Prayers before sleep, notes

“Courage” is a wide word

The Slavonic word translated “courage” means greatness of soul. The notes in a Russian prayer book explain it as fearlessness and a firm spirit, joined with mercy. In the prayer it stands between patience and meekness.

The Scripture in it

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

Luke 23:42 Quoted “Remember me in Your kingdom”: almost word for word the plea of the thief crucified beside Jesus.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

Mark 12:30 Echoed “To love You with all my soul and mind”: the first commandment.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6:10 Echoed “Let Your will be done”: from the Lord’s Prayer.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

Proverbs 1:7 Echoed “The root of good: the fear of You”: the fear of the Lord as the beginning of wisdom.

But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Revelation 21:27 Echoed “Write me in the book of life”: the Lamb’s book of life.
