Prayer for leaders

Remember, O Lord, every ruler and authorityto whom You have given the rightto rule on the earth.

Give them deep peacethat cannot be taken away.Speak good things into their heartsfor Your Church and for all Your people,so that in their calmwe may lead a quiet and peaceful lifein all godliness and dignity.

Keep the good in Your goodness.Make the wicked goodby Your kindness.

Traditional wording, 1906

Have in remembrance, O Lord, all Rulers and Authorities,as also our brethren who are in their Council;and all their Army and Navy.

In their goodness, preserve Thou the good, and through Thine own goodness make Thou the evil good.

It comes from the Liturgy of St Basil and asks deep peace for every ruler and authority, so that their people may live a quiet life. Then it asks God to keep the good in His goodness and make the wicked good.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Greek of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, with Hapgood’s 1906 translation beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: Isabel F. Hapgood, Service Book of the Holy Orthodox-Catholic Apostolic Church, 1906.

Hapgood’s book of 1906 says the lines on deep peace and a quiet life for the sovereign alone (in Russia, the emperor), just before these words. Here it prays for the council and the army as well. Today’s Greek says those lines for every ruler and authority.

To confess a nation’s sins

Daniel’s prayer for his people

O Lord, the great and awesome God,Who keeps His covenant and His faithful lovewith those who love Him and keep His commandments,we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled, and turned away from Your commandments and Your laws.We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our leaders and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

O LORD, we are covered with shame,we and our kings, our leaders and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.Mercy and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God,even though we have rebelled against Him.

Turn Your ear, my God, and hear.Open Your eyes and see our ruinsand the city that bears Your name.We do not lay our pleas before Youbecause of our own righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercy.O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive!O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay, for Your own sake, my God,because Your city and Your people bear Your name.

Traditional wording, 1611

O Lord, the great and dreadful God,keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love Him,and to them that keep His commandments; We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from Thy precepts and from Thy judgments:Neither have we hearkened unto Thy servants the prophets, which spake in Thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face,to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers,because we have sinned against Thee.To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses,though we have rebelled against Him;

O my God, incline Thine ear, and hear;open Thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by Thy name:for we do not present our supplications before Theefor our righteousnesses, but for Thy great mercies.O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive;O Lord, hearken and do; defer not,for Thine own sake, O my God:for Thy city and Thy people are called by Thy name.

The prophet Daniel confesses the sins of his whole people, their kings and leaders included. Then he asks God to hear and forgive, for the sake of His great mercy.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Hebrew (verses 4 to 6, 8 and 9, and 18 and 19), with the King James Version beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: The King James translators, The King James Version, 1611.

For rulers, from AD 96

Prayer of St Clement of Rome

Grant us, Lord,to hope in Your name, the source of all creation.Open the eyes of our hearts to know You,Who alone are highest among the highest, the Holy One at rest among the holy. You humble the pride of the arrogant. You bring to nothing the plans of the nations. You lift up the lowly and bring down the lofty. You make rich and make poor. You put to death and give life. You alone are the Maker of spiritsand the God of all flesh. You look into the depths. You watch over all that people do.You are the Helper of those in danger, the Saviour of those who have lost hope, the Creator and Overseer of every spirit. You multiply the nations on the earth, and out of them all You have chosen those who love You,through Jesus Christ,Your beloved Son,through Whom You taught us,made us holy and honoured us.

We ask You, Master,to be our Helper and Protector.Save those of us who are in distress.Have mercy on the lowly.Lift up the fallen.Show Yourself to those in need.Heal the sick.Bring back those of Your people who have wandered.Feed the hungry.Set free those of us in prison.Raise up the weak.Comfort the fainthearted.Let all the nations know that You alone are God,and Jesus Christ is Your Son,and we are Your people and the sheep of Your pasture.

Through Your works You made plainthe everlasting order of the world. You, Lord, created the earth. You are faithful in all generations, righteous in Your judgments, wonderful in strength and majesty, wise in creating, and full of understanding in setting firm what You made, good in all we seeand kind to those who trust in You.Merciful and compassionate One,forgive us our wrongdoing and our injustice, our sins and our failings.Do not count every sin of Your servants, men and women, but cleanse us with the cleansing of Your truth.Direct our stepsto walk in holiness of heartand to do what is good and pleasingbefore You and before our rulers.

Yes, Master, let Your face shine on us for good, in peace,so that we may be sheltered by Your mighty handand delivered from every sin by Your uplifted arm.Deliver us from those who hate us without cause.Give harmony and peace to usand to all who live on the earth,as You gave them to our fatherswhen they called on You in holiness,in faith and truth, while we obey Your almighty and glorious nameand our rulers and governors on the earth.

You, Master, gave our rulers the power to reignthrough Your majestic might, beyond all telling,so that we, knowing the glory and honourYou have given them, may be subject to them, and resist Your will in nothing.Grant them, Lord, health, peace, harmony and steadiness,so that they may use the authority You have given themwithout fault. For You, Heavenly Master,King of the ages, give the sons of men glory and honourand power over all that is on the earth.Lord, direct their counseltoward what is good and pleasing before You,so that they may use the authority You have given themin peace and gentleness, and with reverence, and find You merciful.

You alone are able to do these things, and better things still, for us.We praise You through the High Priestand Guardian of our souls,Jesus Christ, through Whom be glory and majesty to You,now and to all generations, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Traditional wording, 1891

[Grant unto us, Lord,] that we may set our hope on Thy Name which is the primal source of all creation, and open the eyes of our hearts, that we may know Thee,Who alone abidest Highest in the lofty, Holy in the holy;Who layest low the insolence of the proud, Who scatterest the imaginings of nations;Who settest the lowly on high, and bringest the lofty low;Who makest rich and makest poor; Who killest and makest alive;Who alone art the Benefactor of spirits and the God of all flesh;Who lookest into the abysses, Who scannest the works of man;the Succour of them that are in peril, the Saviour of them that are in despair;the Creator and Overseer of every spirit;Who multipliest the nations upon earth, and hast chosen out from all men those that love Theethrough Jesus Christ, Thy beloved Son, through Whom Thou didst instruct us, didst sanctify us, didst honour us.

We beseech Thee, Lord and Master, to be our help and succour.Save those among us who are in tribulation; have mercy on the lowly; lift up the fallen;show Thyself unto the needy; heal the ungodly; convert the wanderers of Thy people;feed the hungry; release our prisoners; raise up the weak; comfort the faint-hearted.Let all the Gentiles know that Thou art God alone, and Jesus Christ is Thy Son,and we are Thy people and the sheep of Thy pasture.

Thou through Thine operations didst make manifest the everlasting fabric of the world.Thou, Lord, didst create the earth.Thou that art faithful throughout all generations, righteous in Thy judgments, marvellous in strength and excellence,Thou that art wise in creating and prudent in establishing that which Thou hast made, that art good in the things which are seen and faithful with them that trust on Thee, pitiful and compassionate, forgive us our iniquities and our unrighteousnessesand our transgressions and shortcomings.Lay not to our account every sin of Thy servants and Thine handmaids, but cleanse us with the cleansing of Thy truth, and guide our steps to walk in holiness and righteousness and singleness of heartand to do such things as are good and well-pleasing in Thy sight and in the sight of our rulers.

Yea, Lord, make Thy face to shine upon us in peace for our good, that we may be sheltered by Thy mighty hand and delivered from every sin by Thine uplifted arm.And deliver us from them that hate us wrongfully.Give concord and peace to us and to all that dwell on the earth, as Thou gavest to our fathers, when they called on Thee in faith and truth with holiness, [that we may be saved,]while we render obedience to Thine almighty and most excellent Name, and to our rulers and governors upon the earth.

Thou, Lord and Master, hast given them the power of sovereignty through Thine excellent and unspeakable might, that we knowing the glory and honour which Thou hast given them may submit ourselves unto them,in nothing resisting Thy will.Grant unto them therefore, O Lord, health, peace, concord, stability, that they may administer the government which Thou hast given them without failure. For Thou, O heavenly Master, King of the ages, givest to the sons of men glory and honour and powerover all things that are upon the earth.Do Thou, Lord, direct their counsel according to that which is good and well-pleasing in Thy sight, that, administering in peace and gentleness with godliness the power which Thou hast given them, they may obtain Thy favour.

O Thou, Who alone art able to do these things and things far more exceeding good than these for us,we praise Thee through the High-priest and Guardian of our souls, Jesus Christ, through Whom be the glory and the majesty unto Thee both now and for all generations and for ever and ever. Amen.

The church of Rome wrote it during or just after an emperor’s persecution. Even so, it asks health, peace and steadiness for rulers, and that God direct their counsel toward what is good.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Greek, with Lightfoot’s 1891 translation beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: J. B. Lightfoot and J. R. Harmer, The Apostolic Fathers, 1891.

The words in square brackets are Lightfoot’s own, added where he thought the Greek had lost a few words.

Scripture for this

1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.

1 Timothy 2:1-2 Paul asks prayers for kings and everyone in authority, so that we may lead quiet and peaceful lives in godliness and dignity.

“Seek the prosperity of the city to which I have sent you as exiles. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Jeremiah 29:7 God told His exiles to seek the good of their city and pray for it, because if it prospered, so would they.

The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases.

Proverbs 21:1 A king’s heart is like a stream in the Lord’s hand, and He turns it wherever He wishes.

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness lifts a nation up, and sin is a disgrace to any people.

… and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 God promised Solomon that if His people humble themselves, pray and turn from evil, He will hear and heal their land.

Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

1 Peter 2:17 Peter tells Christians in any land to honour everyone and love their brothers, to fear God and honour the king.
