The prayer for a safe journey from the Liturgy of St Mark

The priest prays it in the Liturgy of St Mark. It asks God to go with every traveller and bring them safely home.

The words of the prayer

Plain English

Give a good journey to our brothers and sisterswho have gone away from home or are about to go,in every place they travel, whether by land, by river or by lake, along the roads, or in any other way.Bring them all, wherever they are,to a calm harbour, a harbour of safety.

Be pleased to sail with them and to walk the road with them.Give them back to their families, glad and well, to families who are glad and well.

And keep us too, Lord, unharmed and free from stormsto the end of our time as strangers in this life.

Traditional wording, 1886

Guide and prosper our brethren who have gone or who are about to go abroad.Whether they travel by land, or river, or lake, by public road, or in whatever way journeying, bring them everywhere to a safe and tranquil haven.Be pleased to be with them by land and sea,and restore them in health and joy to joyful and healthful homes.

Ever defend, O Lord, our journey through this life from trouble and storm.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Greek of the Liturgy of St Mark, with George Ross Merry’s translation beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: George Ross Merry, Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 7, 1886.

Where Merry has God “be with them by land and sea”, the Greek asks God to sail with them and walk the road with them.

When it is said

In the Liturgy of St Mark it comes after the prayers for the sick and before the prayer for rain.

Anyone can pray it at home, for someone on a journey or for everyone who is travelling today.

The liturgy of Alexandria

The Liturgy of St Mark is the old Communion service of the Church of Alexandria in Egypt. Its full Greek text survives in a manuscript of the 12th century. The liturgy is named after the evangelist Mark. The church historian Eusebius recorded the tradition that Mark was the first sent to preach the Gospel in Egypt and that he founded the first churches in Alexandria.

Still prayed in church

The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia approved the Liturgy of St Mark for use in 2007. A few of its churches serve it each year on St Mark’s feast, so this petition for travellers is still prayed at the altar.

The Scripture in it

All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and welcomed them from afar. And they acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

Hebrews 11:13 Echoed Believers of old called themselves strangers and exiles on the earth. The petition ends by praying for our time as strangers in this life.
