The words of the prayer

Plain English

O Lord, our God and Creator,You honoured us human beingswith Your own image. You taught Your chosen ones, and Your teaching amazes those who listen to it.You reveal wisdom to little children. You taught Solomonand all who seek Your wisdom.

Open the hearts, the minds and the lipsof these Your servants,so that they may receive the power of Your lawand learn well the useful lessonsthat they will be taught,to the glory of Your most holy name, for the good and the building up of Your holy Church, and so that they may understandYour good and perfect will.

Deliver them from every attack of the enemy.Keep them in Orthodoxy and in the faith,in all godliness and purity, all the days of their life,so that they may grow in understandingand in keeping Your commandments.Made ready in this way,may they glorify Your most holy nameand become heirs of Your kingdom.

For You are God, mighty in mercy and good in strength, and all glory, honour and worship are Yours, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,at all times, now and always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Traditional wording, 1906

O Lord our God and Creator,Who hast honoured us men with Thine own image;Who hast taught Thine elect,so that wonderful are they who give heed to Thy teaching;Who revealest wisdom unto babes;Who hast imparted Thy teaching unto Solomonand unto all who have sought Thy wisdom:

Open Thou the hearts, the minds, and the lips of these Thy servants, that they may receive the power of Thy law,and successfully apprehend the useful precepts which shall be taught them,to the glory of Thine all-holy Name,to the profit and building up of Thy holy Church, and that they may understand Thy good and perfect will.

Deliver them from every hostile oppression;preserve them in Orthodoxy and the faith, and in all uprightness and purity all the days of their life, that they may advance in wisdom, and in the fulfilling of Thy commandments:that, being thus prepared, they may glorify Thine all-holy Name, and become heirs of Thy kingdom.

For Thou art God mighty in mercy, and gracious in strength;and unto Thee do we ascribe glory,to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

When it is said

A priest reads it aloud at a service of prayer for children beginning their lessons. Today it is known as the service before the start of the school year.

The service opens with Psalm 34: “Come, children, listen to me.” Its Gospel is Jesus blessing the children. At the end the priest blesses the children with the cross. They kiss it, and he sprinkles them with holy water.

Where it comes from

No author known

A service for the first lessons

Isabel Hapgood, an American translator, printed this prayer in English in 1906. It comes in “A Service of Prayer when Children Begin their Instruction”. Her book tells the priest to read it aloud “with all heed and emotion”. No author is named, and its age is not known.

Let the children come

The service’s Gospel is the day people brought young children to Jesus, so that He would touch them. His disciples turned them away, and Jesus was displeased. He said the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Then He took the children in His arms and blessed them.

Mark 10:13-16, in Hapgood (1906) and in the service as Foma prints it today

A joy to their parents

Before this prayer comes the litany, a chain of short requests. It asks God to send the children the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and to open their minds and their lips. One request asks that they may lead a wise and virtuous life, and be “a joy and consolation to their parents”.

Isabel F. Hapgood, Service Book (1906)

The Scripture in it

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:27 Echoed “You honoured us with Your own image”: God made man in His image.

At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.”

Matthew 11:25 Echoed “You reveal wisdom to little children”: Jesus thanks the Father for this.

… behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been another like you, nor will there ever be.

1 Kings 3:12 Echoed “You taught Solomon”: God gave Solomon a wise and discerning heart.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 Echoed Paul on knowing God’s good and perfect will.
