The prayer for rain

The first of seven prayers for rain in the Russian Orthodox service in time of drought. It remembers Elijah, whose prayer brought the rain back.

The words of the prayer

Plain English

Master, Lord our God,You heard Elijah the Tishbitebecause of his zeal for You.You commanded that the rainwhich comes to the earth in its season be held back, and then, at his prayer,You gave the earth fruitful rain again.

Master of all,we beg You, of Your own compassion:give abundant rain to Your inheritance.Overlook the sins we have committed, and send down Your rainson the places that need them and ask for them.

Gladden the face of the earth, for the sake of Your poor people, and of the little children, and the animals, and all others, for they look to Youto give them their food in due season.

For You are our God,the God Who has mercy and saves, and to You we give glory,to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever.Amen.

Traditional wording, 1999

O Master, Lord our God, Who didst hear Elijah the Tishbitebecause of his zeal for Thee, and for a time didst command that rain be held backfrom being sent unto the earth, and again at his prayer didst grant it fruit-bearing rain:

Do Thou Thyself, O Master of all, Who art being entreated, out of Thy deep compassion grant abundant rain unto Thine inheritance;and, overlooking our sins,do Thou send down Thy rains upon every place entreating and praying for it.

Make glad the face of the earth, for the sake of Thy poor people and infants, and animals and all others, for they trust in Thee, that Thou wilt give drink unto them in due season.

For Thou art our God, a God Who showeth mercy and saveth, and unto Thee do we send up glory:to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: St Tikhon’s Monastery, The Great Book of Needs, Volume IV, 1999.

St Tikhon’s has God “give drink” to His creatures in due season. The Slavonic says food.

When it is said

A priest reads it near the end of a service of prayer sung in time of drought.

The service also reads from the letter of James: the farmer waits patiently for the precious fruit of the earth, until the rains come.

Outside a drought, the Church still prays for good weather in its regular services. The litany, the deacon’s chain of short petitions, asks for good weather, for plenty of the fruits of the earth, and for peaceful times.

Seven prayers for a drought

The Russian Church’s book of services for country parishes has a whole service of prayer for a drought. It closes with seven prayers for rain, and this is the first. The book credits them to Kallistos, a patriarch of Constantinople. It also has a service for the opposite trouble: heavy rain that falls out of season.

Elijah and the rain

The prayer remembers the prophet Elijah. In the days of King Ahab, Israel turned to the idol Baal. Elijah told the king that no rain would fall except at his word, and for three and a half years none fell. Then, on Mount Carmel, the people turned back to God. Elijah prayed, and heavy rain came. The letter of James holds him up as a man like us whose prayer was heard.

1 Kings 17:1 and 18:39-45; James 5:17-18

The Scripture in it

And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees. “Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’” Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.

1 Kings 18:41-45 Echoed Elijah prays on Mount Carmel, and the heavy rain comes.

Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.

James 5:17-18 Echoed Elijah prayed that it would not rain, and it did not. He prayed again, and the rain came.

You sent abundant rain, O God; You refreshed Your weary inheritance.

Psalm 68:9 Quoted “Abundant rain” for God’s inheritance: the Slavonic words come from this psalm.

All creatures look to You to give them their food in due season.

Psalm 104:27 Quoted All creatures look to God for their food in due season.
