The words of the prayer

Plain English

Lord our God,we have brought before Your eyesthis seed, the gift of Your most pure and generous hand, and we pray You, Master, to take it into Your care.

For we would not dareto shut it away in the lifeless depths of the earthif we did not look to the command of Your majesty, which bids the earth bring forth and sprout, and give seed to the sower and bread to eat.

And now we pray to You, our God:hear us as we pray.Open to us Your great, good and heavenly treasury, and pour out Your blessinguntil we have all we need,as You have truly promised.

Drive away from us all that devours the fruit of our land, and every punishment justly brought on us for our sins.Send down Your rich mercies on all Your people,by the grace of Your only-begotten Sonand His love for mankind. With Him You are blessed, together with Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever.Amen.

The priest pours blessed wheat into the seedBless the crown of the year with Your goodness, O Lord.Let Your fields be filled with plenty, and let the valleys abound with wheat.

He sprinkles the seed with holy waterMay Your blessing, O Lord, come down on this seed.May it sprout and bear much fruit,in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.Amen.

He sprinkles the land that will be sownVisit this land, O Lord, water it and enrich it.Bless its furrows and multiply its grain. For You are our God,and to You we give glory,to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever.Amen.

He throws seed onto the field three timesIn the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.Amen.

Traditional wording, 1999

O Lord our God, we offer the seed that lies before Thine eyeswhich is a donation from Thy most-pure and most-rich hands, O Master, and handing this unto Thee, we pray,

for we dare not to enclose this into the bosom of the soulless earth,if we did not heed the commandment of Thy Majesty, bidding the earth to germinate and sprout, and to render seed for sowing and bread for food.

And now we pray Thee, O our God:Hearken unto us that are beseeching Thee, and open unto us Thy great, and good, and heavenly storehouse;and pour out Thy blessing, that we may be abundantly satisfied, according to Thy true promise.

And do Thou drive away from us every thing that devours our earthly fruit, and every chastisement justly brought upon us for the sake of our sins. And send down upon all Thy people, the riches of Thy compassions, through the grace and love for mankind of Thine Only-begotten Son,with Whom Thou art blessed, together with Thy Most-holy, Good, and Lifegiving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: St Tikhon’s Monastery, The Great Book of Needs, Volume III, 1999.

St Tikhon’s book gives only the priest’s prayer. The short blessings said over the seed and the field are in the Russian Rural Book of Needs, so only the plain wording has them.

When it is said

A priest says it in the field at the start of sowing, standing over the seed and facing east.

He brings holy water and wheat blessed at the all-night vigil, the long service on the eve of a Sunday or a feast. After the prayer come three short blessings: over the wheat, the seed and the land.

A blessing in the field

This prayer belongs to the Russian Church’s blessing at the start of sowing, from its book of services for country parishes. The priest brings holy water and blessed wheat to the field about to be sown. He puts on his stole, stands facing east, and begins over the seed.

Wheat, water and salt

After the prayer the priest pours the blessed wheat into the seed. He sprinkles the seed, then the land, with a short blessing for each. Then he throws seed onto the field three times, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The same water, mixed with salt, is sprinkled on fields, gardens and vineyards.

The Scripture in it

For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat …

Isaiah 55:10 Quoted The earth sprouts, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Hosts.

Malachi 3:10-11 Echoed God opens heaven’s storehouse, pours out blessing, and drives off what devours the crops.

You attend to the earth and water it; with abundance You enrich it. The streams of God are full of water, for You prepare our grain by providing for the earth. You soak its furrows and level its ridges; You soften it with showers and bless its growth. You crown the year with Your bounty, and Your paths overflow with plenty. The pastures of the wilderness overflow; the hills are robed with joy. The pastures are clothed with flocks, and the valleys are decked with grain. They shout in triumph; indeed, they sing.

Psalm 65:9-13 Quoted The rite reads this psalm: God crowns the year, waters the furrows and fills the valleys with grain.

In Church Slavonic
