The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

O Master, Lord, merciful and loving toward mankind,we cry out to You:we have sinned and done wrong before You.We have broken Your saving commandments, and we did not show the love of the Gospelto our brother or sister who despaired.

But do not rebuke us in Your anger, nor discipline us in Your wrath.O Master, Lover of mankind, ease and heal the grief of our hearts.Let the multitude of Your compassionsovercome the abyss of our sins, and let the depths of Your goodness, beyond all counting, cover the bitter sea of our tears.

Yes, O sweetest Jesus, we pray to You once more:give Your servants, the family of the one who took their own life, comfort in their sorrowand firm hope in Your mercy.

For You are a merciful God Who loves mankind, and we send up glory to You,with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and for ever and ever.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic of the 2011 rite. No English translation was found, so the English is our own. How the wording is made.

When it is said

A priest reads this prayer near the end of the Russian Church’s rite of consolation for the family of someone who took their own life.

The rite may be read whenever a relative comes to a priest for comfort, and more than once, as a memorial service can be.

A family member might also pray these words at home.

Where it comes from

Why the Russian Church wrote it

The Church’s canons forbid prayer in church for those who take their own lives. But the Russian Holy Synod’s preface of 2011 says that most who die this way today were baptized but never raised in the Church. In the Synod’s words, they end their lives “out of their mind”, not in conscious defiance of God. Families refused a funeral were drifting from the Church with no comfort, so the Synod gave priests these prayers for them.

The rite and its preface (Azbyka)

When a funeral is possible

The same meeting of the Synod reminded priests that a funeral may be held, without the body present, for someone who took their own life while mentally ill, if doctors’ evidence shows the illness. The Russian Church’s teaching on social questions allows church prayer for such a person once the bishop has looked into the case. So the practice depends on the case, and a family should ask their priest.

What the words mean

“Our brother or sister”

The rite prints “our brother”, with “our sister” in brackets for a woman. A priest prays it with the family, so its “we” is everyone praying, the priest among them. When it asks comfort for the family, it names them apart, as “Your servants”.

The rite (Azbyka)

The Scripture in it

O LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.

Psalm 6:1 Quoted Do not rebuke me in Your anger, turned from “me” to “us”.

In Church Slavonic

From Rite of prayerful consolation for the relatives of one who took his own life, approved by the Russian Holy Synod on 27 July 2011 (Azbyka).
