The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God,God of all mercy and compassion, patient and full of mercy,You love the righteousand have mercy on sinners.

With Your most pure lips You said:“Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

See, we who are sinful and unworthy, worn out by sorrows and troubles, run to You, fall down before You and pray:heed the Mother of God, who bore You,as she pleads for us;receive the prayers of Your saints;bend down to our weakness, and show Your mercy to Your people, who trust in Your love for mankind, whatever their situation.

Comfort those who grieve, give courage to the downcast, strengthen those who have grown weak, heal the sick, send patience to the maimed and the paralysed, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give shelter to the homeless, help those who labour, and give relief to those weighed downby the cares of life and by hard work.

Strengthen with patience those on trial,in prisons, in chains, shut away, in exileand in bitter labour, and bring them quickly out to freedom.Keep safe those at war, bring the captives home, bring together those who are parted, make peace between those at odds, show mercy to all in all things, and present everyone to Your holy Churchas people who please You.

For it is Yours to have mercy on usand to save us, O Lord our God,and we give glory to You,with Your Father, Who has no beginning, and the Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

When it is said

The Russian Orthodox Church has a short service of prayer, a moleben, “for those in sorrows and various hardships”. A priest sings a moleben most often when someone asks for one.

Its Gospel reading is Jesus’s call to all who are weary and burdened to come to Him. Near the end the priest reads this prayer, which quotes those words.

Where it comes from

A service for hard times

This prayer belongs to a moleben, a short service of prayer cut down from the morning service of feast days. The Russian Church’s book of molebens has one “for those in sorrows and various hardships”. This prayer comes near its end. No author is named.

Saints who knew hard times

The service’s canon, a long hymn in several parts, asks the prayers of saints who suffered. Among them are Job, “a model of patience”, and the martyr St Eustathius, who grieved when he was parted from those he loved. Another is St John Chrysostom, twice driven from his place as bishop. He died on the road into exile, saying “Glory to God for all things”.

The Scripture in it

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 Quoted Christ’s call to the weary and burdened, which the prayer quotes. The service reads it as its Gospel.

For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’

Matthew 25:35-36 Echoed Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, remember those in prison: Christ’s own list.
