The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

Lord Jesus Christ our God,the one true and most merciful Physician,You said through Your apostle Paulthat flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God.Yet You took flesh from the Virgin in a way beyond wordsand came down to earth, and You came down to our bodily weaknesses too,so that, healed in body, we may serve You in spirit.

And so today You have enlightened the mind of Your servant the doctor with wisdom, made the doctor’s hand firm and strong, and through surgery given healing to our suffering (name).

Therefore we glorify Your care for us, which is beyond words,we sing of Your love for mankind, and with love we kiss Your mercy, which overcomes our sins.

Yes, Lord, accept this, our prayer of thanks, which we bring You with one voice and one heart. And when the hour comes for the whole world to rise, count us worthy to rise in a spiritual body without flawand to receive Your Kingdom as our inheritance,as with all the saints we sing unending praiseto You, with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your most holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

When it is said

A priest says it at a short service of thanks once an operation has gone well, with a few short pleas that go with it.

In church the priest names the surgeon as well as the patient.

At home the patient or the family might pray it once the danger is past.

The doctor’s mind and hand

The prayer thanks Christ, the one true Physician, for two gifts to the surgeon, wisdom for the mind and strength for the hand. The pleas beside it ask God to keep helping doctors in their good work, and to give patience to everyone who suffers.

What the words mean

Why does it quote Paul?

It opens with Paul’s words that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 15:50). The prayer answers that Christ came down to our bodily weakness all the same, so that people healed in body may serve Him in spirit. It ends by asking to rise one day in a spiritual body with no flaw (1 Corinthians 15:44).

The Scripture in it

Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

1 Corinthians 15:50 Quoted Paul on flesh and blood and the Kingdom of God, quoted at the start

It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

1 Corinthians 15:44 Echoed Paul on the spiritual body raised from the dead

… so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:6 Echoed Paul’s wish that believers praise God with one mind and one voice

In Church Slavonic

Господи, Иисусе Христе, Боже наш, Едине Врачу Истинне и Многомилостиве!

Ты рекл еси усты апостола Твоего Павла, яко плоть и кровь Царствия Божия не наследуют;
