Prayer to love one another

The prayer of a short Russian Orthodox service for the increase of love. It asks Christ, Who gave the new commandment, to renew our love for Him and for one another.

The words of the prayer

Plain English

O Lord Jesus Christ our God,You gave Your disciples a new commandment:to love one another.

Accept this prayerfor the forgiveness of the sins of us all,Your faithful servants. Our love for You and for our brothers has run dry.Renew it by Your Holy Spirit, and plant it firmly in our hearts.

Then, keeping Your commandments through this love, may we not seek our own gain on earth, but be zealous for Your glory, and for building up and saving our neighbours.

Having lived like this in love and peace with allin this life, may we be counted worthy, with all who have pleased You,to glorify You and Your Father, Who has no beginning, and the Holy Spirit,in the dwellings on high, for ever and ever.Amen.

Traditional wording, 1999

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God,Who gavest a new commandment to Thy disciples, that they should love one another:

Accept this offeringfor the remission of all the sins of Thy right-believing servants. And by Thy Holy Spirit renew love for Thy goodness and for neighbor, which has waxed cold in us.Do Thou establish this with strength in our hearts,

that, fulfilling Thy commandments,we seek not on earth our own ends, but that which is to Thy glory, the building up of our neighbor, and for salvation.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic of the Russian book of moleben services. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: St Tikhon’s Monastery, The Great Book of Needs, Volume III, 1999.

St Tikhon’s prints the priest’s form of this prayer, said as he prepares the bread and wine for a liturgy for the increase of love. So it asks God to accept “this offering”, not “this prayer”, and it ends before the last lines, on praising God in heaven.

When it is said

It is the prayer the priest reads near the end of a moleben, a short Russian service of prayer, “for the increase of love and the uprooting of hatred and all malice”. Like most molebens, it is served when people ask for it.

It can also be said at home, for a family, a parish or a friendship where love has grown cold.

Where it comes from

The moleben it closes opens with Psalm 133, on how good it is for brothers to live together in unity. Its readings are Paul on love in 1 Corinthians 13, or a passage of John’s first letter, and Jesus’s new commandment in John’s Gospel. The service book names no writer and gives no date.

Even our enemies

Early in the same service comes a litany, a list of requests prayed aloud. It asks God to make us love “not only our friends and brothers, but our enemies too”, to do good to those who hate us and to pray for them. It also asks that we never judge a brother, but love him as ourselves.

The apostle of love

The service’s last words ask the prayers of the Mother of God and of St John the Theologian, the apostle and evangelist. The preface of the Russian book of moleben services suggests joining this service to one for St John, “the apostle of love”, on his feast days. Christian love, it says, has grown thin in our time.

The Scripture in it

A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also must love one another.

John 13:34 Quoted Christ’s new commandment, which the prayer quotes: love one another as I have loved you.

No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.

1 Corinthians 10:24 Echoed “Not to seek our own gain”: Paul’s rule to seek the good of others.

In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

John 14:2 Echoed “The dwellings on high”: the many rooms in the Father’s house that Jesus promised.

In Church Slavonic
