Troparion of the Conception of the Theotokos

The Church’s hymn for 9 December, when it remembers Anna conceiving the Mother of God after long childlessness. It begins “Today the bonds of childlessness are loosed.”

Picture: Giotto, The Meeting at the Golden Gate, 1303–05

The words of the prayer

Plain English

Today the bonds of childlessness are loosed, for God has heard Joachim and Annaand clearly promises them that, beyond all hope, they will have a child of God,from whom He Himself, the One nothing can contain, was born and became a mortal man, after He had told an angel to cry out to her:Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you!

Traditional wording

Today, the bonds of barrenness are loosed, for God, hearkening unto Joachim and Anna, doth manifestly promise unto them who, beyond all expectation, will give birth to the divine maiden, from whom the Infinite One Himself, becoming a man, shall be born. And He commandeth the angels to cry unto her:Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, the Lord is with thee!

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Greek, with a traditional English Menaion beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: an unnamed translator, English Menaion for 9 December, All Saints Eastern Orthodox Church.

This English has “barrenness” where the Greek has “childlessness”, and “the angels” where the Greek has one angel.

When it is said

The Church sings it on 9 December, the feast of St Anna’s conception of the Mother of God, at Vespers, Matins and the Liturgy.

In the Greek service books it is the day’s apolytikion, its main troparion.

Joachim and Anna’s prayer

The hymns of 9 December tell how Joachim and Anna lived faithfully under the Law of Moses and had no child. One of them gives the couple a prayer of their own, in which they tell God, “Thou knowest the pain, reproach and grief of childlessness. Wherefore, grant us fruit of the womb.” This troparion sings of the day God answered them.

Hannah on the same day

The Orthodox Church remembers the prophetess Hannah on 9 December too. Like Anna, she longed for a child for years. She wept as she prayed at Shiloh, and the son she was given was the prophet Samuel.

OCA, troparia and kontakia for 9 December; 1 Samuel 1:10-20

The Scripture in it

The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Luke 1:28 Quoted The angel’s greeting to Mary: “The Lord is with you.”
