St Athanasius, Letter to Marcellinus

When to pray it

In the 300s, St Athanasius of Alexandria wrote a letter to his friend Marcellinus about praying the Psalms. In it he matched psalms to what people go through. This is what he gave this one for.

You're marvelling at how well the world is ordered, at God's care in it, and at how good His commands are.

When you marvel at the order of creation, God's care within it, and the holy commands of His law, sing Psalms 19 and 24.

  1. 1The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein.
  2. 2For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
  3. 3Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place?
  4. 4He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear deceitfully.
  5. 5He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from the God of his salvation.
  6. 6Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face, O God of Jacob. Selah
  7. 7Lift up your heads, O gates! Be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of Glory may enter!
  8. 8Who is this King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
