The words of the prayer

Plain English

Blessed Saint Roch, patron of the sick, have pity on those who lie in bed in pain.

While you were in this world, your power with God was so greatthat many were healed of their diseases by the sign of the cross, and in heaven that power is no less.

So offer our sighs and tears to Godand obtain from Him the health we are looking for, through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

Traditional wording, 1875

Oh! blessed S. Roch, patron of the sick, have pity upon those who lie upon a bed of suffering.

Your power was so great with God while you were in the world, that by the sign of the Cross numbers were healed from their diseases. And now that power is not less in heaven.

Offer then to God our sighs and tearsand obtain from Him that health we seek, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

His story

He was born at Montpellier about 1295 and gave his fortune to the poor when he was about 20 years old. On a pilgrimage to Italy he nursed people sick with the plague, until he caught it himself at Piacenza and went off to a hut in the forest, where a gentleman named Gothard found him and looked after him. Back at Montpellier he would not say who he was, so he was taken for a spy and put in prison, and he died there five years later.

Why people ask St Roch

Animals and pets

Catholics name him the patron of dogs. The story usually told says that while he lay sick with plague in a forest hut, a dog brought him bread every day from its master’s table, and he is painted with the dog beside him.
