Prayer for a future spouse

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

Master, Lord our God,Source of life and immortality,Maker of all creation, seen and unseen,You govern all things by Your wise and all-good providence.Look mercifully on us, Your unworthy servants.Do not remember our iniquities, but in Your boundless kindness forgive us our sins.

Almighty Creator and Maker of all,You said that it is not good for man to be alone, and so You made for our forefather Adama helper suited to him.

You went with the servant of Abraham the patriarchto Mesopotamia, when he was sentto find a wife for his master Isaac, and by the drawing of waterYou showed him Rebekah, to be betrothed to Isaac.

You guided Tobias wisely too. When he had found a wife, he prayed to You with thanksthat he might find mercy and grow old with her.And through the mouth of wise Solomon You said,“He who finds a good wife finds favor.”

Our most pure Savior,You took flesh from the ever-virgin Maryand were born for the salvation of mankind.Out of Your great goodness and Your gift beyond words,You came to Cana in Galilee and blessed the marriage there,so that all might know that lawful marriageand the bearing of children within it are Your will.

Hear our prayer, O Lord, and grant this Your servant (name)a marriage after their own heart,as a help, and for the continuing of the human race,so that, living together in one mind, they may spend this life in faith, love and holiness, with chastity, and reach the dwellings of heaven, where all the saints give thanksand glorify Your all-holy name,of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A young woman’s prayer

Prayer to find a husband

O all-good Lord,I know that my great happiness depends on this:that I love You with all my soul and all my heart, and do Your holy will in everything.Guide my soul Yourself, O my God,and fill my heart.I want to please You alone, for You are my Maker and my God.

Keep me from pride and from love of self.Let good sense, modesty and chastity adorn me.Idleness displeases You and breeds vices:give me a love of hard work, and bless the work I do.

Your law bids people live in honourable marriage. So lead me, Holy Father,to this calling You have made holy, not to please my own desirebut to fulfil Your purpose. For You Yourself said: It is not good for man to be alone. And when You had made him a wife to help him,You blessed them to grow, to multiply and to fill the earth.

Hear my humble prayer, sent up to You from the depths of a young woman’s heart.Give me a husband who is honest and devout,so that he and I, in love and in harmony, may glorify You, the merciful God,Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and for ever and ever.Amen.

Traditional wording

O All-Good Lord, I know that on this depends my great happiness, that I love Thee with all my heart and all my soul, and fulfil Thy holy will in all things.Do Thou Thyself guide my soul, O my God, and fill my heart:I desire to please Thee alone, for Thou art my Creator and my God.

Preserve me from pride and self-love;let reason, modesty, and chastity adorn me.Idleness offends Thee, and engenders vice;give me then a desire for diligence and bless my labours.

Inasmuch as Thy law commands men to live in honourable matrimony,so bring me, O Holy Father, to this calling which Thou hast consecrated, not for the satisfaction of my desires, but unto the fulfillment of Thy purpose;for Thou Thyself hast said: It is not good for man to be alone, and having made woman for an help meet unto him,Thou didst bless them to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Hearken unto my humble prayersent up to Thee from the depths of a maiden's heart:give me a spouse, honourable and pious, that together with him in love and concord we may glorify Thee, the Compassionate God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Genesis 2:18 From the start God saw it was not good for the man to be alone. Two of the prayers on this page quote His words.

12“O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14Now may it happen that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

Genesis 24:12-14 Abraham’s servant prays to find a wife for Isaac. At an Orthodox betrothal, the priest recalls how God led him to Rebekah.
