When you feel alone

Come, True Light

Come, true Light.Come, eternal Life.Come, hidden Mystery.Come, Treasure with no name.Come, Reality no words can tell.Come, Person no mind can grasp.Come, endless Gladness.Come, Light that never sets.Come, true Hope of all who will be saved.Come, You Who raise up the fallen.Come, Resurrection of the dead.Come, mighty One:by Your will alone You always make, remake and change all things.

Come, You for Whom my wretched soul has longed, and still longs.Come, the Only One, to one who is alone, for I am alone, as You see.Come, You Who set me apart from all thingsand made me alone on earth.Come, You Who have Yourself become the longing in me,and made me long for You, Who are wholly beyond reach.Come, my breath and my life.Come, the comfort of my humble soul.Come, my joy, my glory and my endless delight.

Stay, Master, and do not leave me alone. Then my enemies, who always seek to swallow up my soul, will come and find You staying in me.They will flee altogether and have no power against me,for they will see You, the Strongest of all, seated within the house of my humble soul.

For You are every good thing, all glory and all delight. To You belongs glory,O holy and life-giving Trinity, one in essence,Father, Son and Holy Spirit, honoured and known, worshipped and adored by all,now and ever, and for ever and ever.Amen.

Come, true Light!Come, Thou Eternal Life!Come, Hidden Mystery!Come, Thou Nameless Treasure!Come, Ineffable Thing!Come, O Incomprehensible Person!Come, Thou Eternal Exultation!Come, Unfading Light!Come, True Expectation of all those who are to be saved.Come, Thou that raisest up all those who are laid low.Come, Resurrection from the dead.Come, O Mighty One that acteth always, changing and altering all things by Thy will alone.

Come, Thou for Whom my miserable soul hath longed with great yearning!Come, Thou Who art alone to the alone, since I am alone as Thou seest.Come, Thou Who hast set me apart from all thingsand made me to be alone upon the earth.Come, Thou hast become longing itself in meand hast caused me to long for Thee Who art altogether inaccessible!Come, my breath and my life!Come, O Consolation of my lowly soul!Come, my joy, glory, and perpetual delight!

Abide, Master, and leave me not alone, that when mine enemies come, who ever seek to devour my soul, and finding Thee abiding within me,they may flee completely and overpower me not, seeing Thee, Who art mightier than all, seated within the mansion of my humble soul.

For Thou art every good, and every glory, and every delight;and glory becometh Thee, the Holy, Consubstantial and Life-giving Trinity, honored, known, worshiped, and adored by all,in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

It comes from St Symeon the New Theologian, a monk who knew exile. He prays plainly, “I am alone, as You see,” and asks God to come and to stay.

When no one seems to care

You are my refuge (Psalm 142)

With my voice I cry out to the Lord;with my voice I plead with the Lord for mercy.I pour out my complaint before Him;I tell Him my trouble.

When my spirit grows faint within me,You know my path.

Look to my right hand and see:there is no one who knows me.There is nowhere left for me to run;no one cares for my soul.

I cry to You, O Lord;I say, “You are my refuge,my portion in the land of the living.”

Listen to my cry,for I am brought very low.

Bring my soul out of prison,so that I may give thanks to Your name. The righteous will gather around me,for You will be good to me.

Traditional wording, 1611

I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.I poured out my complaint before Him; I shewed before Him my trouble.

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then Thou knewest my path.

I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

I cried unto Thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for Thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

David prayed it from a cave while King Saul hunted him. He looks around and finds no one who cares for his soul, so he turns to God as his refuge.

With no helper but God

Prayer of Esther

My Lord, You alone are our King.Help me, who am aloneand have no helper but You,for I am taking my life in my hands.

Remember, O Lord;make Yourself known in the time of our trouble, and give me courage,King of gods and Ruler over every power.

Save us by Your hand, and help me, who am aloneand have no one but You, O Lord.

Your servant has had no joyfrom the day my life changed until now, except in You, O Lord, God of Abraham.

O God, Whose might is over all, hear the voice of those who have lost hope.Save us from the hand of evildoers, and save me from my fear.

Traditional wording, 1611

O my Lord, Thou only art our King: help me, desolate woman, which have no helper but Thee:For my danger is in mine hand.

Remember, O Lord, make Thyself known in time of our affliction, and give me boldness, O King of the nations, and Lord of all power.

But deliver us with Thine hand, and help me that am desolate, and which have no other help but Thee.

Neither had Thine handmaid any joy since the day that I was brought hither to this present, but in Thee, O Lord God of Abraham.

O Thou mighty God above all, hear the voice of the forlorn and deliver us out of the hands of the mischievous, and deliver me out of my fear.

A short cry for His nearness

Swift and steady comfort

Give swift and steady comfort to Your servants, O Jesus, when our spirits lose heart.

Do not be parted from our souls in affliction;do not be far from our minds in times of trouble, but always come quickly to meet us.

Come near to us, come near, You Who are everywhere. As You were always with Your apostles, unite Yourself also to those who long for You, O Compassionate One,so that, joined to You,we may praise and glorify Your all-holy Spirit.

Traditional wording, 1891

A speedy and firm consolation give, O Jesus, to Thy servants when our spirits are distressed.

Depart not from our souls in affliction, nor stand far off from our minds in trouble, but for ever go before us.

Draw nigh unto us, draw nigh, Thou that art everywhere present. As Thou wast always with Thine Apostles, O Compassionate One, be Thou with us who long for Thee, that, being conjoined with Thee, we may hymn and glorify Thy most Holy Spirit.

Christ’s promise

Kontakion of the Ascension

When You had fulfilled Your plan for our sakeand joined the things on earth to the things of heaven,You were taken up in glory, O Christ our God.

Yet You never left, but remain with us, never apart, and You cry out to those who love You:“I am with you, and no one will be against you.”

Traditional wording, 2011

When Thou didst fulfill Thy dispensation for our sake, uniting things on earth with the heavens, Thou didst ascend in glory, O Christ our God,

departing not hence, but remaining inseparable from us, and crying unto them that love Thee: I am with you, and no one shall be against you.

As Christ goes up to heaven, this hymn has Him promise those who love Him, “I am with you, and no one will be against you.” He never left them, and He has not left you.

Scripture for this

The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”

Genesis 2:18 At the very beginning, God Himself said it was not good for the man to be alone. Loneliness was never what He wanted for us.

God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

Psalm 68:6 God does more than notice the lonely. He settles them in families.

Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.

Psalm 27:10 Even if the people closest to you turn away, the Lord will take you in.

“Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.”

John 16:32 Jesus knew His friends would scatter and leave Him alone. Yet He was not alone, because the Father was with Him.

16At my first defense, no one stood with me, but everyone deserted me. May it not be charged against them. 17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles would hear it. So I was delivered from the mouth of the lion.

2 Timothy 4:16-17 At Paul’s first defence in court, everyone deserted him. But the Lord stood by him and gave him strength.

“and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20 In the last words of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus promises to be with His followers always, to the end of the age.
