If faith saves the desperate

The eighth morning prayer of the Russian Orthodox prayer book. It begs Christ to save someone who feels past saving, trusting His promise that whoever believes in Him will live.

The words of the prayer

Plain English

O my God, rich in mercy and all-merciful,Lord Jesus Christ, out of Your great love You came downand took on human fleshto save everyone.

Save me too, O Saviour, by grace, I beg You.For if You saved me because of my works, that would not be grace or a gift, but rather a debt.Truly, You are great in compassion, and Your mercy is beyond words.

For You said, O my Christ,“Whoever believes in Me will liveand will never see death.”So if faith in You saves those in despair, see, I believe. Save me,for You are my God and my Creator.

Let faith instead of works be imputed to me, O my God,for You will find no works at all that could justify me.But let that faith of mine be enough in place of all works.Let it answer for me,let it justify me,let it give me a share in Your eternal glory.

Do not let Satan snatch me away, O Word, and boast that he has torn mefrom Your hand and Your fold. But whether I want it or not, save me, O Christ my Saviour.Hurry and reach me first, for I am about to perish. You have been my Godfrom my mother’s womb.

Lord, grant that I may love You nowas I once loved sin itself, and work for You eagerly, without laziness,as I once worked for Satan the deceiver. And I will work for You even more,my Lord and God Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Traditional wording, 2011

O my plenteously-merciful and all-merciful God, Lord Jesus Christ, through Thy great love Thou didst come down and become incarnate so that Thou mightest save all.

And again, O Saviour, save me by Thy grace, I pray Thee. For if Thou shouldst save me for my works, this would not be grace or a gift, but rather a duty; yea, Thou Who art great in compassion and ineffable in mercy.

For he that believeth in Me, Thou hast said, O my Christ, shall live and never see death. If, then, faith in Thee saveth the desperate, behold, I believe, save me, for Thou art my God and Creator.

Let faith instead of works be imputed to me, O my God, for Thou wilt find no works which could justify me.But may my faith suffice instead of all works, may it answer for, may it acquit me, may it make me a partaker of Thine eternal glory.

And let Satan not seize me and boast, O Word, that he hath torn me from Thy hand and fold. But whether I desire it or not, save me, O Christ my Saviour, forestall me quickly, quickly, for I perish.Thou art my God from my mother’s womb.

Vouchsafe me, O Lord, to love Thee now as fervently as I once loved sin itself, and also to work for Thee without idleness, diligently, as I worked before for deceptive Satan. But supremely shall I work for Thee, my Lord and God, Jesus Christ, all the days of my life, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic, with the Jordanville Prayer Book beside it. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, Prayer Book, 2011.

Where the Jordanville English has “as fervently as I once loved sin itself”, the Slavonic says only “as I once loved that very sin”.

When it is said

It is the eighth of the morning prayers in the Russian Orthodox prayer book, between a prayer to the Mother of God and one to the guardian angel.

Pray it on any morning, or at any hour, when you feel too far gone for God to reach.

Where it comes from

No author known

Who wrote it

A few of the Russian morning and evening prayers are taken from the church services, and a few more have a known Greek original. This prayer is neither, so no one knows who wrote it or where it was first written.

How old it is

In 2017 the priest Peter Pchelintsev traced the morning and evening prayers through old manuscripts. He found this one in a handwritten prayer book of the mid-1500s. There it stands among the prayers a person said alone after the Midnight Office, a service of the night hours.

What the words mean

Who are “the desperate”?

The Slavonic word behind “the desperate” means people in despair. A note in a Russian prayer book puts the line into modern Russian as “if faith in You saves those who despair (who have lost all hope), then here I am, I believe”.

The Scripture in it

Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him Who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.

Romans 4:4-5 Echoed In Paul’s words, a worker’s wages are owed to him, not given as a gift.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26 Echoed Christ’s words to Martha before He raised Lazarus, that whoever believes in Him will live.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand.

John 10:28 Echoed Christ promises that no one will snatch His sheep out of His hand.

From birth I was cast upon You; from my mother’s womb You have been my God.

Psalm 22:10 Quoted David prays to the God Who has been his God since his mother’s womb.

In Church Slavonic
