The prayer after meals

What Orthodox Christians say after they eat. It thanks Christ for earthly food, and asks Him not to keep us from His heavenly kingdom. Monks end their daily meal with it.

The words of the prayer

Plain English

We thank You, O Christ our God,that You have filled us with Your earthly good things.Do not deprive us of Your heavenly kingdom as well. But as You came among Your disciples, O Saviour, giving them peace, come to us also and save us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, have mercy.Three times

Blessed is God,Who has mercy on us and feeds us from His rich gifts,by His grace and love for mankind,at all times, now and always, and for ever and ever. Amen.

Traditional wording, 1982

We thank Thee, Christ our God, for Thou hast satisfied us with Thine earthly gifts.Deprive us not of Thy Heavenly Kingdom, but as Thou camest among Thy disciples, O Savior, giving them peace,so come to us and save us!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy! (3 times)

Blessed is God, Who has had mercy on us and fed us from His rich gifts, through His Grace and love for mankind, always, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

When it is said

It is said standing, after meals, at home and in monasteries. Russian prayer books give it after every meal. Greek ones give it after the midday meal, and words from Psalm 4 after supper.

In monasteries it ends the daily meal. On Sundays and feasts the monks first say an older grace. Then they lift up a bread offered in honour of the Mother of God.

The monks’ thanks after their meal

Fr Mikhail Zheltov, a scholar of Orthodox worship, calls it a troparion, a short church hymn. He writes that on most days monks end their meal with it and with “It is truly meet”, a hymn to the Mother of God.

From the monastery to the family table

Russian and Greek prayer books give it to families as the thanks after a meal. The Russian prayer book names where it comes from: the book of hours, in its prayers for the meal. The short blessing after it, “Blessed is God”, is the priest’s in a monastery.

What the words mean

A short form and a long one

Some Russian prayer books stop after “Your heavenly kingdom”. So does an English translation of 1897, made from a Russian prayer book for village schools. The Church’s book of hours goes on: “as You came among Your disciples, giving them peace, come to us also and save us.”

The Scripture in it

It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.

John 20:19 Echoed “As You came among Your disciples, giving them peace”: on Easter evening the risen Jesus stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you.

Deuteronomy 8:10 Echoed When you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the Lord your God: thanks after a meal, from the Law of Moses.

In Church Slavonic
