The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,You came into the worldnot for the righteous but for sinners.Come to the help of my child (name) too,and raise them up from their fall.

All-good Lord,do not let the devil make a mockery of them,or let them stain their soulwith sins and wrongdoing.

You had mercy on Mary of Egyptand turned her love of pleasureinto a love of hard spiritual struggle. When the sorcerer Cyprian gave up serving demons,You made him a bishopcrowned with a martyr’s crown.Come to the help of my childand help them turn away from all evil.

I know that no sin is greater than Your mercy.Give them strength to break the enemy’s chainswith tears of repentance.Give them the good thoughtto run to a priest and confess their sins.Lord, do not let them be lost.

Despair weighs on me,and bitter sorrow over their fall troubles my heart. My soul sighs. When will You come to help? When will we rejoice in Your mercies?

Have mercy on them, Lover of mankind;have mercy on them, most sweet Jesus.Do not let the one You made be swallowed up by death, but grant that they be filled with Your grace,so that, seeing Your great love for mankind, they may love You with all their heartand glorify You for ever and ever. Amen.

What the words mean

Two sinners Christ turned around

The prayer reminds Christ of two people He changed. St Mary of Egypt loved pleasure until He turned her to a life of hard spiritual struggle. Cyprian was a pagan sorcerer of Antioch who repented and burned his books. He became a bishop, and in AD 304 he was beheaded for Christ at Nicomedia.

“My son”

The Romanian prays for “my son” all the way through, though its title speaks of a child. The plain wording says “my child,” so that a mother or father can pray it for a daughter as well.

The Scripture in it

This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

1 Timothy 1:15 Echoed Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

“But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:13 Echoed Jesus came to call not the righteous, but sinners.

In Romanian

Amin.
