Prayer for a home

A prayer from the Russian Orthodox blessing of a new home. It asks God to keep everyone who lives there in peace, love and harmony, into old age.

Picture: Johannes Vermeer, The Little Street, about 1658

The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

Lord God, Master Almighty, bless this home, we pray You,and all Your servants who live in it,so that, kept by You,they may live in peace, love and harmony.

Bless them,so that, doing Your holy will, they may live here into old ageand see their children’s children.

Bless them with joy, gladness and plenty,so that they may comfort those in need.

Bless them with long life,so that, pleasing You, the Master, Maker and Saviour, those who live in this homemay by Your mercy also enter Your heavenly Kingdom, prepared for all who keep Your commandments.

Hear us, All-merciful One,and bless this home and those who live in it,so that they may always praise You, our God,Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever.Amen.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic. How the wording is made.

When it is said

It belongs to a short service for blessing a new home, led by a priest.

Nothing in it is only for a priest to ask. You can pray it at home for your own household, on moving in or on any day.

Where it comes from

No author known

From the blessing of a new home

No one knows who wrote it, or when. The Russian book of hours ends with short services for special needs, and one is for blessing a new home. It gives a first prayer, then “another prayer”: this one. The first asks God to keep from harm those who will live there. This one asks for their whole life together.

Zacchaeus’s house

The service reads the Gospel of Zacchaeus, the tax collector Jesus visited at home. Its hymn asks that as salvation came to Zacchaeus’s house when Christ came in, He would now give His peace to this house too. Its first prayer begins the same way: God our Saviour “was pleased to enter in under the roof of Zaccheus”.

The Scripture in it

… that you may see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel!

Psalm 128:6 Echoed “See their children’s children”: the psalm’s blessing on a home that fears the Lord.

Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

Matthew 25:34 Echoed The Kingdom prepared for those who do God’s will.
