The words of the prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, our God,You taught us to pray always for one another, for so we fulfil Your lawand show ourselves worthy of Your mercy.

Look with mercy on my spouse, (name),whom You gave me to live with until death, and guard them from enemies seen and unseen.

Give them health and the fullness of wisdom,so that they may fulfil their dutiesby Your will and Your commandments.Shield them from temptationstoo heavy for them to bear.

Strengthen them in the true faithand in perfect love,so that together we may do good worksand order our lifeby Your holy laws and commandments.

For Yours is the dominion and the power for ever.Amen.

Where it comes from

A monk’s book?

An English version, printed in 1991 by St Xenia Skete, a small monastery in California, says it was translated from a book by Nicodim Măndiță. He was a Romanian monk and writer who died in 1975, after 40 years hearing the confessions of the nuns of Agapia and Văratec. That English version is longer than the Romanian printed here. Whether he wrote the prayer or gathered it is not known.

What the words mean

“My husband (my wife)”

The Romanian reads “my husband (my wife), whom You have given me”, so each reader picks the word that fits. This page says “my spouse” instead, so the same words serve a husband and a wife as they stand.

The Scripture in it

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.

James 5:16 Echoed “Pray for each other”: the prayer opens on this teaching.

In Romanian

Amin.
