The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

O Lord our God,You are rich in mercy, and in Your wise care You guide our life.Hear our prayer.Accept our repentance for our sins.Stop this new contagious disease, this new epidemic,as You ended the punishment of Your peoplein the days of King David.

You are the Physician of our souls and bodies.Give healing to those who have fallen ill, raising them quickly from their bed of pain,so that they may glorify You, the merciful Saviour. And keep those who are wellsafe from every illness.

By Your grace, O Lord, bless, strengthen and protectall who care for the sick,at home or in hospitals, with love for others and with self-sacrifice.

Take away all sickness and suffering from the people, and teach us to treasure life and healthas Your gifts.

Give us Your peace, O God,and fill our hearts with unshaken faith in Your protection, with hope in Your help, and with love for You and for our neighbour.

For it is Yours, our God,to have mercy on us and to save us,and to You we give glory,to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and for ever and ever.Amen.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Romanian, as the Romanian Orthodox Church sent it out. How the wording is made.

When it is said

In Romanian churches the priest read it just before the dismissal, the closing blessing of the Liturgy, Vespers or Compline. He stood facing east on the solea, the step before the icon screen, and the people answered “Amen”.

It names no disease, so it can be prayed in any epidemic. Anyone may pray it at home.

Where it comes from

A prayer from 2020

Patriarch Daniel, head of the Romanian Orthodox Church, sent this prayer to every diocese of his Church on Wednesday 11 March 2020, as COVID-19 spread. He said it was useful above all “in this time when the whole world faces the pandemic”.

Ziarul Lumina, Special prayer for the ending of the new epidemic (2020); Mediafax, Patriarch Daniel said a special prayer for the end of the COVID-19 epidemic (2020)

Prayed beyond Romania

A Russian prayer book prints it in Church Slavonic among its prayers in time of epidemic, and names Patriarch Daniel as its author. Beside it stand prayers other Churches gave their people the same year: one approved by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, another by Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv.

The Scripture in it

But because of His great love for us, God, Who is rich in mercy …

Ephesians 2:4 Quoted “Rich in mercy”: Paul’s words for God, Who made us alive with Christ.

The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness and restore him from his bed of sickness.

Psalm 41:3 Echoed God sustains the sick on their bed and restores them to health.

And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was halted.

2 Samuel 24:25 Echoed David confessed his sin and pleaded for his people. God relented, answered prayer for the land, and the plague stopped.

Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Matthew 22:37-39 Echoed Love for God and for our neighbour: the two great commandments.

Amin.
