The words of the prayer

Plain English only: no traditional English wording is given for this prayer

O Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty,with a broken and tender heart I pray to You:give rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant (name)in Your heavenly Kingdom.

O Master Almighty,You looked with favour on the union of husband and wifewhen You said: It is not good for the man to be alone;let Us make him a helper suited to him.You made this union holy,as an image of the spiritual union of Christ and the Church.

I believe, O Lord, and I confessthat You blessed me tooto be joined in this holy union with one of Your servants.And it has pleased Your good and all-wise willto take from me this servant of Yours,whom You gave me as my helperand my companion through life.

I bow before this will of Yours,and I pray to You with all my heart:accept this prayer of mine for Your servant (name),and forgive her if she sinnedin word, in deed or in thought,knowingly or unknowingly;if she loved the things of earth more than the things of heaven;if she cared more for clothing and adorning her bodythan for the brightness of her soul’s garment;or if she neglected her children;if she grieved anyone by a word or a deed;if she grumbled in her heart against her neighbour,or judged anyone,or did any other wrong of this kind.

Forgive her all these things,for You are good and love mankind,and there is no one who lives and does not sin.Do not enter into judgment with Your servant,for she is Your creation.Do not condemn her to eternal torment for her sins,but spare her and have mercy on herin Your great mercy.

I pray and I ask You, O Lord:give me strength all the days of my lifenever to stop praying for Your departed servant,and until the end of my own lifeto ask You, the Judge of all the world,to forgive her sins.

O God, as You set on her heada crown of precious stonewhen You crowned her here on earth,so crown her with Your eternal gloryin Your heavenly Kingdom,with all the saints who rejoice there,so that together with them she may sing for everof Your all-holy name,and of the Father and the Holy Spirit.Amen.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic of the Russian prayer books. How the wording is made.

When it is said

A husband can pray it at home on any day after his wife has died.

He says her name in the two places the prayer leaves for it.

Where it comes from

No author known

Where it comes from

Nobody knows who wrote it or when. It appears in Russian prayer books among the prayers for the departed. One gives it the heading “Prayers for a departed wife” and prints it straight after a widow’s prayer for her husband.

A pair of prayers

The widow’s prayer and this one are built alike, and some of their lines are the same. Both open by calling on Christ Jesus as Lord and Almighty. Both bow to the good and all-wise will of God that took the husband or the wife away. And in both the one left behind asks to keep praying for the one who died, to the end of their own life.

What the words mean

The crown of precious stone

At an Orthodox wedding the priest sets a crown on the groom’s head and then on the bride’s. Soon after, the verse “Thou hast set upon their heads crowns of precious stones” is sung. The widower’s prayer looks back to that day. It asks God, Who crowned his wife on earth, to crown her now with His eternal glory.

G. V. Shann, Book of Needs of the Holy Orthodox Church (1894), the Office of Crowning

The Scripture in it

The LORD God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”

Genesis 2:18 Quoted God’s words at the creation, that it is not good for the man to be alone.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.

Ephesians 5:31-32 Echoed Marriage as an image of Christ and the Church.

Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You.

Psalm 143:2 Echoed Do not enter into judgment with Your servant.

For You welcomed him with rich blessings; You placed on his head a crown of pure gold.

Psalm 21:3 Echoed In the Greek this verse speaks of a crown of precious stone, and the Orthodox wedding sings it.

In Church Slavonic

Преклоняюся пред сею Твоею волею, и молюся Ти от всего сердца моего, приими моление мое сие о рабе Твоей (имя), и прости ей, аще согреши словом, делом, помышлением, ведением и неведением;

аще земное возлюби паче небеснаго;

аще о одежде и украшении тела своего печеся паче, неже о просвещении одеяния души своея;

или аще небреже о чадех своих;

аще преогорчи кого словом или делом;

Да яко же Ты, Боже, положил еси на главу ея венец от камене честна, венчая ю зде на земли;

тако увенчай ю вечною Твоею славою в Небеснем Царствии Твоем, со всеми святыми, тамо ликующими, да вкупе с ними вечно воспевает всесвятое имя Твое с Отцем и Святым Духом.

Аминь.
