Three stases · about 45 minutes read aloud

What this is

Plain English

The first stasisBlessed are You, O Lord;teach me Your statutes.Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.

You, the Life, were laid in a tomb, O Christ, and the armies of angels were struck with wonderas they glorified Your coming down to us.

Blessed are those who search out His testimonies;they will seek Him with their whole heart.

O Life, how can You die?How can You dwell in a tomb?Yet You destroy the kingdom of deathand raise the dead from Hades.

For those who work lawlessnesshave not walked in His ways.

We magnify You, O Jesus our King, and we honor Your burial and Your Passion,by which You saved us from decay.

You have given Your commandmentsto be kept with all care.

You set the measures of the earth, yet today You dwell in a small tomb,O Jesus, King of all, raising the dead from their graves.

If only my ways were made straightto keep Your statutes!

O Jesus my Christ, King of all, what have You come to seekamong those in Hades? Is it to set free the race of mortals?

Then I will not be put to shame, when I look on all Your commandments.

The Master of all is seen deadand is laid in a new tomb,He Who empties the tombs of the dead.

I will praise You with an upright heart, when I have learned the judgments of Your righteousness.

You, the Life, were laid in a tomb, O Christ, and by Your death You destroyed deathand made life spring up for the world.

I will keep Your statutes;do not utterly forsake me.

You were counted among the wrongdoers,as a wrongdoer, O Christ, and You free us all from the evil doneby the one who struck at our heel of old.

How will a young man make his way straight?By keeping Your words.

He Who is fairer than all mortalsis seen as a dead man without form or beauty,He Who gave beauty to the nature of all things.

With my whole heart I have sought You;do not push me away from Your commandments.

How will Hades bear Your coming, O Savior, and not be crushed at once into darkness, blinded by the flash of Your light?

I have hidden Your words in my heart,so that I may not sin against You.

O Jesus, my sweetnessand Light of salvation, how are You hidden in a dark tomb?O patience past all words and telling!

Blessed are You, O Lord;teach me Your statutes.

Even the spiritual powers, the bodiless hosts, are at a loss, O Christ, before the mystery of Your burial, which no words can tell.

With my lips I have toldall the judgments of Your mouth.

O strange wonders! O new things! He Who gives me breathis carried without breath, buried by the hands of Joseph.

I delighted in the way of Your testimoniesas much as in all riches.

You went down into the tomb, O Christ, yet You never left Your Father’s bosom. This is strange, and past all belief.

I will meditate on Your commandmentsand understand Your ways.

True King of heaven and of earth, though You are shut in the smallest of tombs, all creation has known You, O Jesus.

I will meditate on Your statutes;I will not forget Your words.

When You were laid in the tomb,O Christ our Maker, the foundations of Hades were shakenand the graves of mortals were opened.

Reward Your servant: give me life, and I will keep Your words.

He Who holds the earth in the hollow of His handhas died in the fleshand is now held fast under the earth, setting the dead free from the grip of Hades.

Open my eyes, and I will see the wonders of Your law.

O my Life, my Savior,You rose up from decaywhen You died and went among the deadand shattered the bars of Hades.

I am a stranger on the earth;do not hide Your commandments from me.

Like a lamp of light,God’s flesh is now hidden under the earth,as under a basket, and drives away the darkness in Hades.

My soul has longed and yearnedfor Your judgments at all times.

The hosts of angels hurry in their multitudewith Joseph and Nicodemusto enclose You, Whom nothing can contain,in a small tomb.

You rebuked the proud;cursed are those who turn away from Your commandments.

Put to death by Your own willand laid under the earth,O my Jesus, Spring of life,You gave life back to mewhen I was dead through bitter sin.

Take reproach and contempt away from me,for I have sought out Your testimonies.

All creation was changed by Your Passion, for all things suffered with You, O Word, knowing that You hold all things together.

For rulers sat and spoke against me,but Your servant meditated on Your statutes.

Hades, who devours all, took the Rock of life into his bellyand spat out the deadhe had swallowed since time began.

For Your testimonies are what I meditate on,and Your statutes are my counselors.

You were laid in a new tomb, O Christ, and made new the nature of mortalswhen You rose from the dead as God.

My soul clings to the ground;give me life according to Your word.

You came down to earth to save Adam, and not finding him on earth, O Master,You went down as far as Hades to seek him.

I told of my ways, and You heard me;teach me Your statutes.

The whole earth shakes with fear, O Word, and the morning star hid its rayswhen Your great light was hidden in the earth.

Make me understand the way of Your statutes, and I will meditate on Your wonders.

As a mortal You die of Your own will, O Savior, but as God You raised mortalsfrom the graves and from the depths of sin.

My soul has drowsed from weariness;make me firm in Your words.

Shedding tears of lament over You, O Jesus, with a mother’s grief, the pure one cried out:“How shall I bury You, my Son?”

Turn the way of wrong away from me,and have mercy on me by Your law.

Like a grain of wheatthat goes down into the bosom of the earth,You have given back a full ear of grain, raising up the mortals born of Adam.

I have chosen the way of truth, and I have not forgotten Your judgments.

You are hidden under the earth now like the sun,and covered by the night of death:but rise again more brightly, O Savior.

I have held fast to Your testimonies, O Lord;do not put me to shame.

As the moon hides the disk of the sun, O Savior,so the tomb has now hidden You,eclipsed by death in the flesh.

I ran the way of Your commandmentswhen You made my heart wide.

Christ, the Life, tasted deathand set mortals free from death, and now He gives life to all.

Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I will seek it out always.

Adam was put to death long ago through envy; You bring him back to life by Your death,O Savior, appearing in the flesh as a new Adam.

Give me understanding, and I will search out Your lawand keep it with my whole heart.

The ranks of angels, seeing You laid out deadfor our sake, were struck with wonder, O Savior, and covered themselves with their wings.

Guide me in the path of Your commandments, for that is what I desire.

Joseph took You down dead from the Tree, O Word, and now has laid You in a tomb. But rise, and save all as God.

Turn my heart to Your testimoniesand not to greed.

You are the joy of the angels, O Savior, and now You have become their cause of griefas they see You in the flesh, breathless and dead.

Turn my eyes away from looking at what is worthless;give me life in Your way.

Lifted up on the Tree,You lift up living mortals with You;and going under the earth,You raise up those who lie beneath it.

Establish Your word for Your servant,so that I may fear You.

Like a lion, O Savior, You have fallen asleep in the flesh, and like a lion’s cub You rise from the dead, putting off the old age of the flesh.

Take away the reproach I dread, for Your judgments are good.

Your side was pierced,You Who took a rib from Adam’s sideand formed Eve from it,and You poured out streams that cleanse.

See, I have longed for Your commandments;give me life in Your righteousness.

Long ago the lamb was sacrificed in secret, but You were sacrificed under the open sky,O patient Savior, and You cleansed all creation.

Let Your mercy come upon me, O Lord,Your salvation, according to Your word.

Who could tell how this came about,so fearful and so new?For the Master of creation todayaccepts suffering and dies for us.

Then I will have an answer for those who taunt me,for I have hoped in Your words.

“How is the Giver of life seen dead?”the angels cried out in amazement.“How is God shut inside a tomb?”

Do not take the word of truthutterly out of my mouth, for I have hoped in Your judgments.

From Your side, pierced by the spear, O Savior,You let life fall in drops on Eve,who drove me out of life, and with her You give me life.

And I will keep Your law always, for ever and ever.

Stretched out on the Tree,You gathered mortals together;and pierced in Your side, from which life flows,O Jesus, You pour out forgiveness for all.

And I walked in a wide place, for I have sought out Your commandments.

Noble Joseph, O Savior, lays You out in fearand buries You with honor as one dead, and he is struck with awe at Your fearful form.

And I spoke of Your testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed.

Going down under the earth by Your will,as one who dies,You lead up from earth to heaventhose who had fallen from there, O Jesus.

And I meditated on Your commandments, which I have loved very much.

Though You were seen dead, yet You live as God,and You lead up from earth to heaventhose who had fallen from there, O Jesus.

And I lifted up my hands to Your commandments, which I have loved,

Though You were seen dead, yet You live as God,and You gave life back to dead mortals, putting to death the one who killed me.

and I meditated on Your statutes.

O that joy! O that great delightwith which You filled those in Hades, when Your light flashed like lightningin the gloomy depths!

Remember Your word to Your servant,in which You have made me hope.

I bow before Your Passion,I praise Your burial in song,I magnify Your might, O Lover of mankind, for through them I am freed from passions that bring decay.

This has comforted me when I was brought low,for Your word has given me life.

A sword was sharpened against You, O Christ, and the sword of the strong man is blunted, and the sword of Eden is turned away.

The proud broke the law beyond measure, but I did not turn aside from Your law.

The ewe, seeing her Lamb slaughtered, cried aloud, struck by His torments, and stirred the flock to cry out with her.

I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord, and I was comforted.

Though You are buried in a tomb, though You go down to Hades, yet, O Savior Christ, You emptied the tombsand stripped Hades bare.

Despair took hold of me because of sinnerswho forsake Your law.

Of Your own will, O Savior, You went down under the earthand gave life back to dead mortals, and You led them up in the Father’s glory.

Your statutes were my songsin the place where I lived as a stranger.

One of the Trinity, in the flesh, for our sake, endured a shameful death:the sun shudders, and the earth trembles.

I remembered Your name in the night, O Lord, and I kept Your law.

As from a bitter spring, the children of the tribe of Judahlaid Jesus in a pit,the One Who fed them with manna.

This has come to mebecause I sought out Your statutes.

The Judge stood as one judgedbefore Pilate the judge, and was condemned to an unjust deathon the wood of the Cross.

You are my portion, O Lord;I have promised to keep Your law.

O boastful Israel, murderous people, what possessed you to set Barabbas freeand hand the Savior over to the Cross?

I sought Your face with my whole heart;have mercy on me according to Your word.

With Your hand You formed Adam from the earth, and for his sake You became man by natureand were crucified by Your own will.

I thought over Your waysand turned my feet to Your testimonies.

Obeying Your own Father, O Word,You went down as far as dreadful Hadesand raised up the race of mortals.

I was ready and not troubledto keep Your commandments.

“Woe is me, Light of the world!Woe is me, my Light! My Jesus, most longed for!”cried the Virgin, mourning bitterly.

The cords of sinners were wrapped around me,and I did not forget Your law.

O envious, murderous, accursed people,be ashamed at least before the linen clothsand the very cloth that covered His face, when Christ has risen.

At midnight I rose to give thanks to Youfor the judgments of Your righteousness.

Come now, you vile and murderous disciple, and show me the way of your wickednessthat made you Christ’s betrayer.

I am a companion of all who fear Youand keep Your commandments.

You blind fool, you pretend to love people, you who are utterly lost and faithless, you who sold the Myrrh for a price.

The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy;teach me Your statutes.

What price did you get for the heavenly Myrrh? What did you take in exchange for the Precious One?You found madness, most accursed Satan.

You have dealt kindly with Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word.

If you love the poorand the myrrh poured out grieves you, poured out to win a soul’s forgiveness, how can you sell for gold the One Who shines with light?

Teach me kindness, discipline and knowledge, for I have believed Your commandments.

“O God and Word, O my joy,how shall I bear Your three days in the tomb? Now I am torn within, as a mother is.”

Before I was humbled I went wrong;so now I have kept Your word.

“Who will give me waterand springs of tears,”cried the Virgin, the Bride of God,“that I may weep for my sweet Jesus?”

You are good, O Lord;in Your goodness teach me Your statutes.

“O hills and valleysand multitude of people, weep, and all of you lamentwith me, the Mother of our God.”

The wrongs of the proud have multiplied against me,but with my whole heart I will search out Your commandments.

“When shall I see You, O Savior,Light beyond time, the joy and delight of my heart?”the Virgin cried out in mourning.

Their heart has curdled like milk, but I have meditated on Your law.

You are the rock of flint, O Savior, and though You let Yourself be cut,You poured out a living stream, for You are the Spring of life.

It is good for me that You humbled me,so that I may learn Your statutes.

Your side pours out a double riveras from a single spring, and watered by itwe reap the harvest of undying life.

The law of Your mouth is better to methan thousands of pieces of gold and silver.

You willed to be seen dead in the tomb, O Word, yet You live, and as You foretold,O my Savior, by Your resurrectionYou will raise mortals up.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

We praise You in song, O Word, the God of all, with the Father and Your Holy Spirit, and we glorify Your divine burial.

Now and ever, and for ever and ever. Amen.

We call you blessed, O pure Mother of God,and in faith we honor the three-day burialof your Son and our God.

The first verse is sung againYou, the Life, were laid in a tomb, O Christ, and the armies of angels were struck with wonderas they glorified Your coming down to us.

The second stasisIt is right to magnify You, the Giver of life,Who stretched out Your hands on the Crossand crushed the power of the enemy.

Your hands made me and formed me;give me understanding, and I will learn Your commandments.

It is right to magnify You, the Maker of all,for through Your sufferings we are free of the passions, rescued from decay.

Those who fear You will see me and be glad, for I have hoped in Your words.

The earth shuddered, and the sun hid itself, O Savior, when You, O Christ, the Light that knows no evening, set bodily in the tomb.

I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are just, and that in truth You humbled me.

You slept, O Christ, the sleep that gives life, in the tomb, and You woke the human racefrom the heavy sleep of sin.

Let Your mercy now come to comfort me,according to Your word to Your servant.

“Alone of women I bore You without pain, my Child, but now at Your Passion I bear pains past bearing,”said the holy one.

Let Your compassion come to me, and I will live, for Your law is what I meditate on.

The seraphim shudder as they see You, O Savior,on high, never parted from the Father, and below, laid out dead on the earth.

Let the proud be put to shame, for they wronged me without cause, but I will meditate on Your commandments.

The veil of the temple is torn at Your crucifixion, the lights of heaven hide their light, O Word, when You, the Sun, are hidden under the earth.

Let those who fear You turn to me,and those who know Your testimonies.

He Who in the beginning, by a nod alone, set fast the round of the earthhas gone down under the earth, breathless as a mortal.Shudder at the sight, O heaven!

Let my heart be blameless in Your statutes,so that I may not be put to shame.

You Who formed man with Your handhave gone down under the earth,to raise the crowds of mortals from their fallby Your almighty power.

My soul faints for Your salvation;I have hoped in Your words.

Come, let us sing a holy lament to Christ Who has died,as the women bearing myrrh did long ago,so that with them we too may hear Him say, “Rejoice!”

My eyes have failed, looking for Your word, and they say, “When will You comfort me?”

You, O Word, are truly myrrh that never runs out,and so the women bearing myrrh brought You myrrh, myrrh for the living God.

For I have become like a wineskin in the frost, yet I have not forgotten Your statutes.

Buried, O Christ, You crush the palaces of Hades;by death You put death to deathand free the people of the earth from decay.

How many are the days of Your servant? When will You bring judgment on those who hunt me down?

The Wisdom of God that pours out streams of lifegoes down into the tomband gives life to those in the hidden depths of Hades.

The lawless told me idle tales, but they were not like Your law, O Lord.

“To make new the broken nature of mortals,I am struck by death in the flesh, of My own will. So, Mother, do not beat your breast in grief.”

All Your commandments are truth;they have hunted me unjustly; help me.

You went down under the earth,O Morning Star of righteousness, and You woke the dead as if from sleep, driving away all the darkness in Hades.

They almost made an end of me on the earth, but I did not forsake Your commandments.

The life-giving grain of two naturesis sown today with tears in the furrows of the earth, but when it springs up,it will fill the world with joy.

Give me life according to Your mercy, and I will keep the testimonies of Your mouth.

Adam hid in fear when God walked in Paradise, but he rejoices now that God comes to Hades:he fell long ago, and now he is raised up.

For ever, O Lord,Your word stands firm in heaven.

She who bore You, O Christ, pours out her tears to You like an offeringas You lie in the tomb in the flesh, and she cries:“Child, rise, as You foretold.”

Your truth is from generation to generation; You founded the earth, and it stands.

Joseph, reverently hiding You in his new tomb, O Savior, sings to You funeral hymns fit for God,mingled with his laments.

By Your order the day stands, for all things are Your servants.

Your Mother, O Word, seeing You piercedwith nails on the Cross, was struck in her soulby the nails and arrows of bitter grief.

If Your law had not been what I meditate on,I would have perished when I was brought low.

Your Mother, seeing You, the sweetness of all, given a bitter drink, wets her face with bitter tears.

I will never forget Your statutes, for by them You have given me life.

“I am badly wounded, and my heart is torn, O Word,as I see You slain unjustly,”said the all-pure one, weeping.

I am Yours; save me,for I have sought out Your statutes.

“How shall I close Your sweet eyes and Your lips, O Word? And how shall I bury You as one dead?”Joseph cried out, trembling.

Sinners lay in wait for me, to destroy me,but I have understood Your testimonies.

Joseph and Nicodemus now singburial hymns to Christ Who has died, and the seraphim sing with them.

I have seen a limit to every perfect thing, but Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

You set under the earth,O Savior, Sun of righteousness;and so the moon who bore You is eclipsed by grief,no longer seeing You.

How I have loved Your law, O Lord!I meditate on it all day long.

Hades shuddered, O Savior, when he saw You, the Giver of life, stripping him of his wealthand raising the dead of all the ages.

By Your commandment You have made me wiser than my enemies, for it is mine for ever.

The sun shines out brightly after the night, O Word;so may You, risen after death, shine out brightly, as from a bridal chamber.

I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are what I meditate on.

The earth received You, O Maker, into her bosomand, gripped with trembling, O Savior, she shakes, and by her shaking she wakes the dead.

I have more understanding than the elders, for I have sought out Your commandments.

Nicodemus and noble Joseph, O Christ, wrapping You now with myrrh in a new way, cried out: “Shudder, all the earth!”

I have kept my feet from every evil way,so that I may keep Your words.

You set, O Maker of light, and the light of the sun set with You;creation is gripped with tremblingand proclaims You the Maker of all.

I have not turned aside from Your judgments, for You have taught me Your law.

A hewn stone covers the Cornerstone, and a mortal man now hides God in the tombas though He were mortal.Shudder, O earth!

How sweet are Your words to my throat, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

“Look on the disciple You loved, and on Your Mother, my Child, and speak to us with Your sweetest voice,”the pure one cried out in tears.

From Your commandments I gain understanding;so I hate every way of wrong.

You, O Word, are the Giver of life,so when You were stretched on the Cross,You did not put the Jews to death, but raised even their dead.

Your law is a lamp to my feetand a light to my paths.

You had beauty before, O Word, but in Your suffering You had no form;yet You rose and shone out all the more, adorning mortals with divine light.

I have sworn and confirmed it:I will keep the judgments of Your righteousness.

You set in the flesh, going into the earth,O Morning Star that knows no evening, and the sun, unable to bear the sight, went dark at the height of noon.

I have been brought very low;O Lord, give me life according to Your word.

The sun and the moon grew dark together, O Savior, like loyal servantswho put on black clothes.

Accept, O Lord, the freewill offerings of my mouth, and teach me Your judgments.

“The centurion knew You were God, though You had died. How then shall I touch You with my hands, my God?I shudder,” Joseph cried out.

My soul is in Your hands always, and I have not forgotten Your law.

Adam slept, and from his side came death;but You, O Word of God, sleeping now, pour out life for the world from Your side.

Sinners set a trap for me,but I did not stray from Your commandments.

You slept a little while and gave life to the dead, and rising, You raised thosewho had slept since time began, O Good One.

I have inherited Your testimonies for ever, for they are the joy of my heart.

You were lifted up from the earth, yet You poured out the wine of salvation,O Vine from which life flows.I glorify Your Passion and Your Cross.

I have bent my heart to do Your statutesfor ever, for the reward.

How did the captains of the angelic ranks, O Savior, seeing You naked, bloodied and condemned, bear the daring of those who crucified You?

I have hated the lawless, but I have loved Your law.

O perverse, most crooked race of the Hebrews, you knew about the raising of the temple:why did you condemn Christ?

You are my helper and my protector;I have hoped in Your words.

In a robe of mockery you dressthe One Who adorns all things,Who filled the heavens with starsand wonderfully adorned the earth.

Turn away from me, you evildoers, and I will search out the commandments of my God.

Like a pelican, O Word, wounded in Your side,You gave life to Your dead children, letting streams of life fall on them in drops.

Uphold me according to Your word, and I will live;do not put me to shame in my hope.

Long ago Joshua made the sun stand stillas he struck down the foreign tribes;but You hid the sunas You cast down the prince of darkness.

Help me, and I will be saved, and I will meditate on Your statutes always.

Never leaving the Father’s bosom, O compassionate One,You were pleased to become a mortal, and You went down to Hades, O Christ.

You have scorned all who fall away from Your statutes, for their thoughts are unjust.

He Who hung the earth upon the watersis lifted up, crucified, and now He lies breathless in it as one dead;unable to bear this, the earth quaked terribly.

I counted all the sinners of the earth as transgressors;so I have loved Your testimonies.

“Woe is me, my Son!”the Virgin laments and says.“I hoped You would be King, and now I see You condemned on the Cross.”

Nail my flesh with the fear of You,for I am afraid of Your judgments.

“This is what Gabriel told mewhen he flew down:he said the kingdom of my Son Jesuswould be eternal.”

I have done justice and righteousness;do not hand me over to those who wrong me.

“Alas! Simeon’s prophecy is fulfilled:Your sword has gone through my heart,O Emmanuel.”

Take up the cause of Your servant for good;do not let the proud slander me.

Be ashamed, O Jews, at least before those raised from the dead, whom the Giver of life raised up,the One you killed out of envy.

My eyes have failed, looking for Your salvationand for the word of Your righteousness.

The sun shuddered when it saw You, my Christ, the invisible Light, hidden breathless in a tomb, and it darkened its light.

Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy, and teach me Your statutes.

Your all-blameless Mother wept bitterly, O Word, when she saw You in the tomb, the God beyond words and without beginning.

I am Your servant; give me understanding, and I will know Your testimonies.

Seeing Your death, O Christ,Your all-undefiled Mother cried to You bitterly:“Do not linger among the dead, O Life.”

It is time for the Lord to act;they have broken Your law.

Dread Hades trembled when he saw You,O deathless Sun of glory, and in haste he gave up his prisoners.

So I have loved Your commandmentsmore than gold and topaz.

A great and fearful sight is seen now, O Savior! For the Cause of life, of His own will, has undergone death, wishing to give life to all.

So I directed my steps by all Your commandments;I have hated every unjust way.

Your side is pierced, and Your hands are nailed, O Master,by Your side healing the wound that came from Adam’s sideand the greed of our first parents’ hands.

Your testimonies are wonderful;so my soul has searched them out.

Long ago the whole household wept for Rachel’s son;now the band of disciples, with His Mother, mourns for the Virgin’s Son.

The unfolding of Your words gives lightand gives understanding to the simple.

They struck Christ on the cheek with their hands, though with His hand He formed manand crushed the teeth of the beast.

I opened my mouth and drew in breath, for I longed for Your commandments.

With hymns, O Christ, all of us who are faithfulnow extol Your crucifixion and Your burial,we who are set free from death by Your burial.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O God without beginning, coeternal Word and Spirit, strengthen the scepters of rulers against their enemies, for You are good.

Now and ever, and for ever and ever. Amen.

You who gave birth to Life, all-blameless and pure Virgin, put an end to the scandals of the Church, and grant peace, for you are good.

The first verse is sung againIt is right to magnify You, the Giver of life,Who stretched out Your hands on the Crossand crushed the power of the enemy.

The third stasisEvery generationbrings a hymn to Your burial,O my Christ.

Look on me and have mercy on me,as is right for those who love Your name.

Taking You down from the Tree, the man of Arimatheaburies You in a tomb.

Direct my steps by Your word, and let no lawlessness rule over me.

The women bearing myrrh came, eagerly bringing You myrrh,O my Christ.

Set me free from people’s slander, and I will keep Your commandments.

Come, all creation, let us bring funeral hymnsto the Creator.

Make Your face shine on Your servant, and teach me Your statutes.

With the women bearing myrrh, let us all wisely anointthe Living One as one dead.

My eyes have poured down streams of water, because I did not keep Your law.

O thrice-blessed Joseph, bury the bodyof Christ, the Giver of life.

You are righteous, O Lord, and Your judgments are upright.

Those whom the manna fedlifted up their heelagainst their Benefactor.

You commanded Your testimonies in righteousnessand in great truth.

Those whom the manna fedbring to the Saviorgall and vinegar together.

Zeal for You has worn me away, because my enemies forgot Your words.

O the madnessand the killing of Christby those who killed the prophets!

Your word is tried in the fire, and Your servant has loved it.

Like a foolish servant, the disciple betrayedthe Abyss of wisdom.

I am young and despised, yet I have not forgotten Your statutes.

He who sold the Delivererbecame a captive himself:Judas the deceitful.

Your righteousness is righteousness for ever, and Your law is truth.

As Solomon says, the mouth of the lawless Hebrewsis a deep pit.

Trouble and distress have found me,but Your commandments are what I meditate on.

In the crooked pathsof the lawless Hebrewsare thorns and snares.

Your testimonies are righteous for ever;give me understanding, and I will live.

Joseph with Nicodemusburies the Creatoras the dead are buried.

I cried out with my whole heart;hear me, O Lord; I will seek out Your statutes.

O Savior, Giver of life, glory to Your mightthat has brought Hades down!

I cried out to You; save me,and I will keep Your testimonies.

Seeing You laid out dead, O Word, the all-pure onemourned You as a mother.

I rose before dawn and cried out;I have hoped in Your words.

“O my sweet springtime,my sweetest Child, where has Your beauty gone?”

My eyes woke before the dawnto meditate on Your words.

Your all-pure Motherraised a lamentwhen You died, O Word.

Hear my voice, O Lord, according to Your mercy;give me life according to Your judgment.

Women came with myrrhto anoint Christ, the divine Myrrh.

Those who hunt me in lawlessness have drawn near, but they are far from Your law.

By death You put death to death,O my God,by Your divine power.

You are near, O Lord, and all Your ways are truth.

The deceiver is deceived;the one he deceived is set freeby Your wisdom, O my God.

From the beginning I have known from Your testimoniesthat You founded them for ever.

The betrayer was brought downto the depths of Hades, into the pit of destruction.

See how I am brought low, and rescue me,for I have not forgotten Your law.

Thorns and snaresare the ways of the thrice-wretched,senseless Judas.

Judge my cause and set me free;give me life for Your word’s sake.

All who crucified You, O Word, will perish together,O Son of God, King of all.

Salvation is far from sinners, for they have not sought out Your statutes.

In the pit of destructionthey will all perish together, the men of blood.

Your compassion is great, O Lord;give me life according to Your judgment.

O Son of God, King of all,my God, my Maker, how did You accept suffering?

Many are those who hunt me and oppress me,but I have not turned aside from Your testimonies.

I saw the senseless and wasted away with grief, because they did not keep Your words.

Joseph buriesthe body that bears life, with Nicodemus.

See how I have loved Your commandments, O Lord;give me life in Your mercy.

The maiden cried out, shedding hot tears, pierced to the heart.

In the crooked paths of the transgressing Hebrews there are thornsand snares.

The righteousness of Thy testimonies is everlasting:give me understanding, and I shall live.

Joseph and Nicodemus bury the Creator with the honors that befit the dead.

I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord:I will seek Thy statutes.

Life-giver and Savior, Thou hast destroyed hell:to Thy power be glory!

I cried unto Thee;save me, and I shall keep Thy testimonies.

When she saw Thee lying dead, O Word, the all-pure Virgin wept with a mother's grief.

I rose up before it was dawn, and cried:I have hoped in Thy word.

“O my sweet springtime, O my sweetest Child, where has all Thy beauty gone?”

Mine eyes woke before the morning:that I might meditate in Thy words.

When Thou, O Word, wast dead,Thine all-pure Mother raised a lamentation for Thee.

Hear my voice according unto Thy loving-kindness,O Lord quicken me according to Thy judgement.

The women came with myrrh to anoint Christ, the Myrrh of God.

They draw nigh that persecute me unlawfully:they are far from Thy Law.

By dying, O my God,Thou puttest death to death through Thy divine power.

Thou art near, O Lord; and all Thy ways are truth.

The deceiver is deceived, and those he misled are set free by Thy wisdom, O my God.

Concerning Thy testimonies,I have known of old that Thou hast founded them forever.

The traitor was cast down to the depths of hell, and to the pit of destruction.

Behold my humiliation, and deliver me:for I have not forgotten Thy law.

Thorns and snares beset the path of Judas the foolishand the thrice-wretched.

Judge my cause, and deliver me:quicken me according to Thy word.

All that crucified Thee shall be destroyed together, O Word,Thou Son of God and King of all.

Salvation is far from the wicked:for they have not sought Thy statutes.

In the pit of destruction shall all the men of blood be destroyed together.

Many are Thy tender mercies, O Lord:quicken me according to Thy judgement.

O Son of God and King of all, my God and my Creator, how hast Thou accepted suffering?

Many are they that persecute and afflict me:yet have I not turned aside from Thy testimonies.

As the mother of a foal, the Virgin gazed on Thee in grief when she saw Thee hanging on the Tree.

I beheld the foolish and was grieved;because they kept not Thy words.

Joseph and Nicodemus bury the body that is the Source of life.

See how I have loved Thy commandments:quicken me, O Lord, in Thy mercy.

Pierced to the heart, the Virgin shed warm tears and cried aloud.

The beginning of Thy words is truth:and every one of Thy righteous judgements endures forever.

“O Light of mine eyes, my sweetest Child, how art Thou hidden now in the sepulchre?”

Princes have persecuted me without a cause:but my heart stands in awe of Thy words.

“Weep not, O Mother, for I suffer this to set at liberty Adam and Eve.”

I will rejoice at Thy words,as one that finds great spoil.

“O my Son, I glorify Thy supreme compassion, that causes Thee to suffer so.”

I have hated and abhorred injustice:but Thy law have I loved.

Thou hast drunk vinegar and gall, in Thy compassion,to loose us from the guilt of the forbidden fruit.

Seven times a day have I praised Thee because of the judgements of Thy righteousness.

Thou art nailed upon the Cross, who of old hast sheltered Thy people with a pillar of cloud.

Great peace have they that love Thy law:and for them there is no stumbling-block.

The women bearing myrrh came, O Savior,to Thy tomb and offered Thee sweet spices.

Lord, I have looked for Thy salvation, and loved Thy commandments.

Arise, O merciful Lord, and raise us from the depths of hell,

My soul has kept Thy testimonies:and loved them exceedingly.

“Arise, O Giver of Life',the Mother who bore Thee said with tears.

I have kept Thy commandments and Thy testimonies:for all my ways are before Thee, O Lord.

Make haste to arise, O Word, and take away the sorrow of Thy Virgin Mother.

Let my prayer draw near to Thee, O Lord;give me understanding according to Thy word.

All the powers of Heaven were filled with fearand wonder when they saw Thee dead.

Let my supplication come before Thee, O Lord:deliver me according to Thy word.

With love and fear we honor Thy Passion:grant us the forgiveness of our sins.

Let my lips speak of Thy praise:for Thou hast taught me Thy statutes.

Strange and dreadful wonder! How art Thou now hidden in the earth, O Word of God?

Let my tongue speak of Thy words:for all Thy commandments are righteousness.

Joseph once fled with Thee, O Savior, and now another Joseph buries Thee.

Let Thine hand be near to save me:for I have chosen Thy commandments.

Thine all-holy Mother weeps for Thee lamenting,O my Savior, at Thy death.

I have longed for Thy salvation, O Lord;and Thy law is my study.

The spiritual powers tremble at Thy strange and fearful burial,O Maker of all.

My soul shall live, and it shall praise Thee:and Thy judgements shall help me.

Early in the morning the myrrh-bearers came to Theeand sprinkled myrrh upon Thy tomb.

I have gone astray like a lost sheep:seek Thy servant, for I have not forgotten Thy commandments.

By Thy Resurrection give peace to the Churchand salvation to Thy people.

Glory be to the Father. . . .

O my God in Trinity, Father, Son and Spirit, grant Thy mercy to the world.

Both now. . . .

Grant to us thy servants to behold, O Virgin, the Resurrection of thy Son.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Greek of the Triodion, with the Lenten Triodion’s 1978 English beside it; the verses of Psalm 119 that the Greek gives by their first words are made whole from the Greek psalm. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: Mother Mary and Archimandrite Kallistos Ware, The Lenten Triodion, 1978.

When it is said

The Lamentations are sung at Matins of Holy Saturday, which most parishes serve on the evening of Holy Friday.

In the middle of the church lies the epitaphios, a cloth icon of Christ laid out for burial, which stands for His burial in the new tomb.

The verses are sung in front of it, each after a verse of Psalm 119, though many parishes now sing only some of them.

In Greek churches the priest sprinkles the epitaphios with rose water at the end of the third part.

Where it comes from

No author known

Who wrote them?

No one knows who wrote them. The scholar Francisco Javier García Bóveda found that their style matches none of the hymn writers known from the time. The oldest service books for Holy Saturday do not seem to mention them. They first appear in manuscripts of the 1200s and 1300s, and the first printed Triodion, published in Venice in 1522, includes them.

Three parts

The verses are sung in three parts called stases. Each is known by its first words: “Life in the grave”, “It is right to magnify You” and “Every generation”. The first part holds 75 verses, the second 62 and the third 48. As they go on, the verses grow shorter and turn more and more toward Christ’s victory. Each part ends with a verse glorifying the Trinity and one to the Mother of God.

Why Psalm 119?

Psalm 119 is Psalm 118 in the Greek Bible. The Orthodox Church in America reads it as a picture of Jesus, the righteous man whose life is in God’s hands and who cannot stay dead. The same psalm is sung at every Orthodox funeral. In Greek churches the priest chants the psalm and the choir sings the praises, while Slavic churches usually do the reverse.

What the words mean

Who is speaking?

Most verses speak to Christ in the tomb. In others His Mother mourns Him (“How shall I bury You, my Son?”), and twice Christ answers her. In one He says, “Do not mourn, Mother. I suffer this to set Adam and Eve free.” Joseph of Arimathea and the angels speak too.

The verses of the psalm

The Greek book gives many verses of the psalm by their first words only, and “Glory to the Father” by its first word. The plain English writes each one out whole. The psalm verses are made from the Greek psalm, and the old English wording gives them whole too.

The verses about “the Jews”

Some verses rebuke Judas, and “Israel”, “the Hebrews” or “the Jews”, over Christ’s trial and death. They are printed here whole. Many parishes and many translations leave the harshest out. The Orthodox theologian Andrew Louth has called for the courage to revise such texts of Holy Week. Yet one verse praises Christ because on the Cross He did not put them to death, but raised even their dead.

The Scripture in it

Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the Law of the LORD. Blessed are those who keep His testimonies and seek Him with all their heart.

Psalm 119:1-2 Quoted The psalm whose verses alternate with the verses of praise.

Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He has poured out His life unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors. Yet He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 53:12 Echoed The prophecy that He would be counted among the wrongdoers.

You are the most handsome of men; grace has anointed your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever.

Psalm 45:2 Echoed The king of the psalm, fairer than all mortals.

He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no stately form or majesty to attract us, no beauty that we should desire Him.

Isaiah 53:2 Echoed The prophecy that He would have no form or beauty.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills with a balance?

Isaiah 40:12 Echoed God holds the dust of the earth in a measure; a verse of praise says Christ holds the earth in His hand.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Matthew 5:15 Echoed The lamp that is not hidden under a basket.

Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

John 12:24 Echoed The grain of wheat that dies in the earth and bears much fruit.

Judah is a young lion—my son, you return from the prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness, who dares to rouse him?

Genesis 49:9 Echoed Judah, the lion’s cub who crouches and lies down.

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.

John 19:34 Echoed The soldier’s spear that pierced His side.

Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body. Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.

John 19:38-40 Echoed Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus bury Him with spices.

Oh, that my head were a spring of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night over the slain daughter of my people.

Jeremiah 9:1 Echoed The prophet’s wish for a fountain of tears.

“so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your soul as well.”

Luke 2:35 Echoed Simeon’s word that a sword would pierce her soul.

Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ μου, Βασιλεῦ τοῦ παντός, τί ζητῶν τοῖς ἐν τῷ ᾍδη ἐλήλυθας; ἢ τὸ γένος ἀπολῦσαι τῶν βροτῶν;

Ἐν τίνι κατορθώσει νεώτερος τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ;

ᾍδης πῶς ὑποίσει, Σῶτερ παρουσίαν τὴν σήν, καὶ μὴ θᾶττον συνθλασθείη σκοτούμενος, ἀστραπῆς φωτός σου αἴγλῃ ἐκτυφλωθείς;

Δακρυρρόους θρήνους, ἐπὶ σὲ ἡ Ἁγνή, μητρικῶς ὦ Ἰησοῦ ἐπιρραίνουσα, ἀνεβόα· Πῶς κηδεύσω σε Υἱὲ;

Ἀλαζὼν Ἰσραήλ, μιαιφόνε λαέ, τί παθῶν τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἠλευθέρωσας; τὸν Σωτῆρα δὲ παρέδωκας Σταυρῷ;

Εἰ φιλόπτωχος εἶ, καὶ τὸ μύρον λυπῇ, κενουμένου εἰς ψυχῆς ἱλαστήριον, πῶς χρυσῷ ἀπεμπολεῖς τὸν Φωταυγῆ;

Τίς μοι δώσει ὕδωρ, καὶ δακρύων πηγάς, ἡ Θεόνυμφος Παρθένος ἐκραύγαζεν, ἵνα κλαύσω τὸν γλυκύν μου Ἰησοῦν;

Πόσαι εἰσὶν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ δούλου σου;

Ὧ γλυκύ μου ἔαρ, γλυκύτατόν μου Τέκνον, ποῦ ἔδυ σου τὸ κάλλος;

Υἱὲ Θεοῦ παντάναξ, Θεέ μου πλαστουργέ μου, πῶς πάθος κατεδέξω;

Ὦ φῶς τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν μου, γλυκύτατόν μου Τέκνον, πῶς τάφῳ νῦν καλύπτῃ;

Ὧ φρικτὸν καὶ ξένον, θέαμα Θεοῦ Λόγε! πῶς γῆ σε συγκαλύπτει;
