The words of the prayer

Plain English

Lord, Your martyr Tryphonreceived from You, our God, in his sufferinga crown that never decays.

For he had Your strength,and brought down his torturersand broke the demons’ powerless boldness.

By his prayers save our souls.

Traditional wording, 1891

Thy Martyr [Tryphon], O Lord, by his sufferings,hath obtained an incorruptible crown from Thee, our God;

for, having Thy strength to help him,he overcame his persecutors, and the vain efforts of the demons.

O save our souls through his prayers.

Plain English by Wiser Walk, from the Church Slavonic. How the wording is made. Traditional wording: G. V. Shann, Euchology: A Manual of Prayers of the Holy Orthodox Church, 1891.

His story

His Life says he was born at Lampsacus in Phrygia, in Asia Minor, and from his youth healed the sick and cast out evil spirits; once his prayer turned a plague of locusts away from his village and saved it from hunger. He freed a daughter of the emperor Gordian from an evil spirit and asked nothing in return but faith in Christ. Arrested for preaching Christ under the emperor Decius, he was tortured, and before his execution at Nicaea in AD 250 he asked the Lord to bless all who would call on his name for help. He died just as the sword was raised over him.
