National Baptist in a sentence

The largest historically Black Baptist body in the United States, made of self-governing congregations with no creed but the Bible. Worship is built on preaching and song, and baptism is the immersion of people who already believe.

Each arm is one axis: the further out it reaches, the stronger the lean, and the colour is which way. The hatched middle is the band where the quiz names neither pole.

What marks it out

Two readings sit almost at the edge. Authority is Scripture alone: no creed binds a National Baptist congregation, and the Articles of Faith are a summary a church may adopt, not a court. The Supper is a memorial, and baptism the immersion of someone who already believes.

On grace the sketch leans towards free response, and the paperwork says why. The Articles follow the New Hampshire Confession of 1833, whose sixth article makes salvation free to all and blames nothing but a sinner’s own refusal, while its eleventh insists real believers are kept to the end by God’s power.

Worship is as free as this map goes: no prayer book, no set order, the shape coming from the preacher, a congregation answering out loud, and the music. In many older churches the devotional before the sermon still carries “Dr Watts” singing, where a leader intones one line and the room returns it.

Nothing in the Articles says the Spirit’s gifts have stopped, and the expectation that He is at work on a Sunday is real, but speaking in tongues is not the marker it is in a Pentecostal church. The dispensational lean, a literal future for Israel, comes from generations of American Baptist preaching rather than from any confession.

Behind that grace reading stands a document most American Baptists have inherited without noticing. The New Hampshire Confession of 1833 was written to be gentler about election than the older Calvinist Baptist confessions, and it traveled: into the South, into the Black conventions, and into the statement the Southern Baptists adopted in 1925. It is why a National Baptist and a Southern Baptist who have never met often describe being saved in nearly the same words.

Did you know?

  • The convention was born in a single day. On 24 September 1895, at Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, three Black Baptist organizations (foreign missions, home missions and education) merged into one body and became its three boards.

  • In 1961 a fight over how long a president could serve, and over Martin Luther King Jr’s direct-action campaigns, broke the convention apart. That November 33 ministers formed the Progressive National Baptist Convention, which King, Ralph Abernathy and Gardner Taylor joined.

Where it came from

Baptist by descent, through the English Separatists and the American revivals, but organized separately: Black Baptists built and ran their own conventions rather than stay junior partners in anyone else’s. Its nearest relatives are the other National Baptist bodies, one of which split away in 1915 in a quarrel over who owned the publishing house, and, in doctrine if not in the sound of a service, the Southern Baptists.
